HBO Says It’s “Aggressively Monitoring And Removing Leaked Clips” Of ‘House Of The Dragon’ Season 2 Finale From Social Media

HBO just can’t seem to catch a break when it comes to keeping their finales under wraps. The network, famous for its high-stakes dramas and jaw-dropping twists, is in the spotlight again for a different kind of drama—a leak. This isn’t the first time HBO has faced this kind of challenge, and it probably won’t be the last.

In an era where social media reigns supreme and spoilers lurk around every digital corner, keeping content secure has become an almost impossible mission. HBO has been navigating these stormy waters for years, especially with the ‘Game of Thrones‘ saga. Now, with ‘House of the Dragon’, they’re up against the same old nemesis. With yet another recent leak of the show’s season finale, HBO has issued a statement.

HBO is addressing the second season finale of ‘House of the Dragon‘ leaking early onto social media. Dozens of clips from the 8th episode, scheduled to premiere on August 4, were illegally uploaded to a TikTok account Tuesday night.

It quickly spread across other social media sites like Twitter/X and Reddit. The clips appeared to be captured by someone filming a screen with a secondary device.

Not new to facing such kind of blunders, HBO was quick to release a statement. “We are aware that clips from the ‘House of the Dragon’ season finale have surfaced across social media platforms. The clips were posted after an unintentional release from an international third-party distributor,” the statement read.

“HBO is aggressively monitoring and removing clips from the internet, and fans can watch the episode in its entirety this Sunday night on HBO and Max,” it added.

This leak marks the second season in a row that the popular fantasy drama’s finale has slipped through the cracks ahead of its planned release. You’d think they might have beefed up security by now, but leaks are as inevitable as a plot twist in Westeros.

The ‘Game of Thrones‘ franchise has a long history of content leaks, which typically occur in the week before airing, when an episode is sent to HBO’s content partners around the world.

The 2022 leak of House of The Dragon‘ Season 1, for instance, was traced to a distribution partner that covered Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. A locked episode being given day-and-date global distribution. It has to pass through many hands prior to air, particularly for regional subtitle dubbing. Honestly, it’s like trying to keep a dragon on a leash—impossible.

House of The DragonSeason 2 finale premieres on Sunday at 9pm EST on HBO/Max.
