HBO seems to be listening to one of the biggest complaints about the upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ series. The initial footage for the show caused a lot of discussion about its dark and muted color palette.

Now, there have been some noticeable changes in the show’s color grading in the new footage. It may seem like a minor thing, but for a franchise as iconic as Harry Potter, it’s important.

The initial teaser, which was released in March, was very dark and had a lot of blue and grey. The atmosphere at Hogwarts was frequently dark and somber. Some moments felt darker than what fans had been led to believe.

Some viewers liked the more serious tone, while others felt the film was lacking in the magic and warmth of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’. The same world is now seen in a much warmer light in the new promo reel, The Best Is Yet to Come, that HBO released recently.

The Great Hall is more lit up, Hogwarts is brighter, and the colors of Gryffindor’s uniforms are more visible. It’s not a completely new series, but the change is so noticeable that it seems HBO heard the fans and agreed with their critique.

The Small Change Could Mean A Lot

It’s nice to see a big studio take notice of an audience’s reaction before the show even opens. HBO could have just turned a blind eye to the complaints and stuck with the original visual style. Rather, the new footage indicates that the creative team is ready to rethink the way the series will be presented.

However, that still doesn’t mean everyone will love the result, obviously. But fans will still have plenty of opinions when the episodes arrive. It’s especially crucial to get the visual identity right for the show, as the original movies created a great sense of atmosphere.

The new series faces a huge challenge as well. HBO has announced that it will adapt all seven Harry Potter novels over seven seasons, allowing the story to breathe much more than it did in the movies. That’s going to require the show to find its own identity, but still maintain the magic that made the Wizarding World so special.

So far, the new footage is a positive development. While HBO might not be aiming to duplicate the films word-for-word, it obviously knows one thing: Hogwarts shouldn’t feel lifeless. It should feel magical.
