One of the biggest reasons ‘Friends’ remains endlessly rewatchable is the incredible chemistry among its six lead actors. In fact, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer became so comfortable in their characters that they would often go beyond the script.
These improvs were so natural and convincing that the showrunners always found a way to sneak them into the actual episodes. Here are ten such improvised moments that made ‘Friends’ even more iconic.
10. Throwing Water On Joey’s Face
In “The One After The Super Bowl”, we got a bunch of guest stars, one of them being Brooke Shields. She played the role of Erica, a stalker of Joey who thought that he was actually Dr Drake Ramoray from ‘Days of Our Lives’.
Unable to convince her otherwise, Joey and the gang decide to tell her he is Ramoray’s evil twin. To make it even more convincing, Rachel and Monica throw water in Joey’s face. But the funniest bit happens when Chandler also joins in, which is rumoured to be one of the show’s funniest improvs.

9. Chandler Gets Hit By A Cabinet
Chandler finds himself trapped in Rachel’s boss Joanna’s office with no pants after she leaves him handcuffed to a filing cabinet. When Rachel discovers the embarrassing situation, Chandler desperately tries to convince her to free him.
During the struggle, he accidentally pulls open the cabinet drawer, which smacks him in the head. The mishap reportedly wasn’t scripted, and we can also see Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry’s genuine shock in the scene.
8. Paolo’s Italian
Rachel’s mysterious Italian boyfriend Paolo is always seen speaking in his native language, but that is because there is one funny secret behind those scenes. Actor Cosimo Fusco revealed that the writers never actually gave him any lines.
Instead, the producers simply asked him to improvise whatever sounded natural during filming. Fusco made most of Paolo’s conversation entirely on the spot and completely sold it to us.
7. Chandler Sticks The Cookbook Pages Together
In one of the show’s most famous episodes, we see the gang deal with Rachel’s Thanksgiving trifle disaster where she adds beef, peas, and onions in the dessert. Ross and Joey find out that it was because the cookbook pages were stuck together.
Immediately, Joey yells “Chandler!” as though he must be responsible for the stuck pages. Apparently, it was a perfect improv on the part of Matt LeBlanc, which completely caught the cast off-guard.
6. “Stop The Q-Tip When There’s Resistance”
In the season two premiere episode, Joey recommends his family tailor to Chandler, only for Chandler to discover the tailor’s behaviour to be wildly inappropriate. But before that, Joey is trying to explain when he last visited the tailor, which drags on most confusingly.
This prompts Chandler to blurt out, “You have to stop the Q-Tip when there’s resistance!”. It is one of the show’s greatest one-liners and reportedly invented by Matthew Perry himself.

5. Ross Hands Chandler A Lamp
In “The One Where Phoebe Hates PBS”, Ross becomes unbelievably excited when Emily calls from London. He rushes across the apartment and randomly hands Chandler a lamp before continuing to talk on the phone.
That strange improv apparently came to David Schwimmer in the moment. It completely took Matthew Perry by surprise, but in his confusion he silently held on to it without any question.
4. Robin Williams and Billy Crystal’s Cameo
Robin Williams and Billy Crystal’s appearance at Central Perk was completely unexpected, and so is its background story. Playing two strangers, the two legends launch into an increasingly dramatic conversation about fidelity while the gang awkwardly listens nearby.
Apparently, the entire exchange in this scene was improvised. Since Williams and Crystal happened to be filming nearby, they dropped in to create one of the show’s most unforgettable opening scenes.
3. Ross and Ben’s Staircase Prank
When Rachel decides to teach Ben some harmless practical jokes, Ross decides to strike back by teaming up with Ben to create one of the most horrifying pranks of all time. As Ross chases Ben into the hallway, he seemingly tumbles down the stairs, leaving Rachel horrified.
The fall was reportedly an elaborate prank involving a dummy of David Schwimmer, and Jennifer Aniston wasn’t warned. She genuinely thought Schwimmer had fallen down the stairs, which is what resulted in her having a completely real reaction in the scene.
2. “Blue Blazer Black”
Chandler is known for making the most hilarious, though sometimes a bit annoying, one-liner jokes in the show. When Ross helps Joey land a job as a museum tour guide and shows up wearing a bright blue blazer, Chandler immediately sees his chance.
Unfortunately, Matthew Perry makes a mistake and says Donald Trump wanted his “blue blazer black” instead of the scripted line “back”. Rather than stopping the scene, the rest of the gang decides to take the joke even further by teasing Chandler’s slip-up.
1. Chandler’s Last Joke
As emotional as the ‘Friends’ finale is, it still found room for one last perfectly timed laugh. As the group leaves Monica’s apartment, someone suggests they all go get coffee together.
Chandler dryly replies, “Where?” as if Central Perk isn’t the obvious choice. The line was reportedly Matthew Perry’s own addition. It was the perfect way to leave one last mark of Chandler’s iconic one-liners and was also the perfect way to end the series.
