Helaena Targaryen has long been one of ‘House of the Dragon‘s most enigmatic figures, quietly delivering cryptic warnings while avoiding the violence that consumes her family.
However, season 3 episode 7 offers a shocking new vision that might change her role in the Targaryen civil war. The episode features one of its most chilling moments as Helaena imagines herself riding Dreamfyre as King’s Landing burns under them for the first time.
Why Helaena Sees Herself Burning King’s Landing in ‘House Of The Dragon’

Director Nina Lopez-Corrado said Helaena’s Dreamfyre sequence was created to showcase her complicated relationship with dragons. Helaena isn’t like most Targaryens, who see dragons as symbols of glory and power. Rather, she views them as the cause of all the bloodshed and heartbreak.

“Helaena has such a strong feeling about the dragons in which she’s torn because she thinks that they do change people and that they’ve changed their whole world, essentially,” she told EW. The vision is particularly sad from that point of view. It’s not a dream of conquest but a nightmare of her unleashing destruction across King’s Landing.
Helaena knows that the Targaryen family is in a vicious cycle of killing, and she is worried that there may be no peaceful resolution left. “I think she knows that deep down inside, because she is a Targaryen, there almost is no positive outcome to anything that’s happening in regards to this war in this family.”
The series also emphasizes a theme that has been present throughout: dragons are not just weapons, but forces that magnify the weaknesses of those who use them. Each dragon is a step closer to destruction than victory for Helaena.
A Warning About The Future Of House Targaryen

It is unclear whether Helaena’s vision is a literal prophecy or a symbolic message, but it is clear that it is an emotional one. Her dreams have been foreshadowing big events throughout the series. So, it’s hard to believe that this is just a figment of her imagination.

The vision is delivered at a pivotal moment in the Dance of the Dragons, when both sides are getting desperate. As the war goes on, Helaena begins to realize that even the “winning” side will only get ashes. Dragons are not the answer to saving House Targaryen for her. She sees them as the reason her family is tearing itself apart.
With only one episode remaining in season 3, Helaena’s haunting dream feels less like a prediction of one battle and more like a warning about the cost of the entire conflict. It’s heartbreaking to remember that, while others are chasing the Iron Throne, Helaena is the only one who sees the terrible cost that everyone will eventually have to pay.
