‘House of the Dragon’ season 3 keeps playing with the idea of magic and psychology, and episode 7 has one of Aemond Targaryen‘s most disturbing scenes yet. What initially appears to be an intimate reunion with his mother, Alicent Hightower, is ultimately revealed to be another of Harrenhal’s haunting visions.
The scene was shocking, but actor Gayle Rankin has now shed new light on what really happened, making Aemond’s character even more tragic.
Alys Rivers Isn’t Controlling Aemond, His Own Mind Is
Speaking about the controversial sequence, Gayle Rankin said that Alys Rivers isn’t putting these visions in Aemond’s head. Rather, the prince is facing up to feelings and unhealed trauma that are already present in him. Alys knows that Aemond is “working through some stuff,” but she’s not dictating what he’s seeing, Rankin said.

“It’s Aemond actually just having this vision, and she has no idea. I think it might be a bit of both. I think she has a sense that he is working through some stuff, but also I don’t believe that she’s implanting this in him,” she told SR.
That distinction alters the interpretation of the scene. The vision is not the one that exposes Alys as a manipulative sorceress pulling all the strings; it’s the one that shows Aemond’s broken emotional state. Harrenhal is just the place where those buried feelings come up.
The moment also echoes Daemon Targaryen’s disturbing visions in season 2, making Harrenhal a castle where Targaryens must face the darkest parts of their subconscious. The ancient fortress doesn’t provide clarity; it strips away emotional barriers and shows fears, guilt, and unhealthy attachments that its visitors are unable to overcome.
What Does This Mean For Aemond’s Future?
The disturbing visions do not end in Episode 7. Alicent’s attempt to poison Aemond turns the relationship between mother and son upside down, and may destroy the last bond Aemond had with her. Despite his growing tension with Alicent, Aemond didn’t listen to Alys because of his loyalty to his mother.

With only one episode left in season 3, the fallout could redefine Aemond’s final journey. When the poisoning finally makes him realize Alicent is not by his side anymore, Alys could be the only person he can trust. That change would also give her increasing power over the prince as they work out their plans for a future together at Harrenhal.
Aemond’s vision isn’t for shock value, but to show the emotional scars that are still influencing his choices. It’s a reminder to viewers that behind the dragonrider’s fearsome face is a man who is deeply divided and desperately seeking love and acceptance.
