Daemon Targaryen is one of the most intriguing characters in ‘House of the Dragon’. The Rogue Prince is likeable, threatening, unpredictable, and always fun to watch. He is also one of those characters who can be very loyal yet very reckless.

However, he still might not be the greatest Daemon in Targaryen history. If you take away the ‘House of the Dragon’ era, the Rogue Prince is pretty unimpressive compared to another Daemon.

Daemon Blackfyre Was A Warrior Without A Dragon

Unlike many Targaryens, Daemon Blackfyre didn’t have the terrifying edge of a dragon. Rather, his fame was largely based on his personal prowess as a warrior and leader. Eventually, King Aegon IV gave him the legendary Valyrian steel sword Blackfyre, which had once been Aegon the Conqueror’s.

That decision alone demonstrated the extraordinary status Daemon Blackfyre had achieved. He was no ordinary nobleman with a dream. He inspired deep loyalty and eventually defied the existing Targaryen rule.

He was most famous for his exploits at the Battle of the Redgrass Field. Daemon was a skilled fighter and could defeat some of the best fighters in the realm. Yet, the most impressive aspect of his story is not just the number of enemies he could defeat.

It was the respect he could command on the battlefield. Daemon Blackfyre was the almost mythical figure of the medieval warrior, charismatic, fearless, skilled, and inspiring soldiers to follow him into an almost impossible fight.

The Rogue Prince has One Big Benefit

It’s fair to say that Daemon Targaryen is playing in a different universe. He’s a dragonrider, a political player, a military commander, and a member of the royal family whose actions directly affect the Dance of the Dragons. He is an important character because of his relationship with Rhaenyra, his loyalty to House Targaryen, and his involvement in the civil war.

And that’s what makes it so fun to compare the two. Caraxes was claimed by Daemon Targaryen. Whereas Daemon Blackfyre had a sword. One of the most fearsome dragons in Westeros was behind him. The other was made legendary, in part due to what he could achieve on his own.

And that makes Daemon Blackfyre’s reputation particularly impressive. The Daemon that most viewers are familiar with is the Rogue Prince. However, the lore’s other Daemon arguably embodies the romantic image of the legendary Targaryen warrior even more completely.
