House of the Dragon’ is closing in on the end of the Dance of the Dragons, and there’s not much reason to hope for a happy ending. The Targaryen civil war has already broken families, friendships, and even armies.

However, the fallout is about to become even more devastating in the final season. There are several big moments in Fire & Blood that will help determine the end, and each one could be a pivotal moment in the series.

These Moments Could Define The Finale

Dragonstone is going to be a pivotal moment in the fall. Eventually, Aegon II reclaims the stronghold, and Baela tries to hold it on Moondancer. The battle with Sunfyre is yet another blow to Rhaenyra. Then there’s the fight that everyone has been waiting for: Daemon vs Aemond over the Gods Eye.

One of the Dance’s most legendary collisions occurs between Caraxes and Vhagar, both of whom suffer a terrible death alongside their riders. The sequence, if it lives up to the hype, could be the most spectacular moment in ‘House of the Dragon’.

The Storming of the Dragonpit will be very different, but perhaps even more painful. When the people of King’s Landing are pushed too far, they rebel against the dragons. What follows is one of the most horrifying moments of the Dance, as the creatures that once represented Targaryen power become targets of the city’s rage.

Perhaps the most tragic is Rhaenyra’s downfall. After losing King’s Landing, she returns to Dragonstone without realizing Aegon has already seized it. Her capture and death effectively destroy the Black cause. And then comes the Hour of the Wolf.

Aegon II’s reign doesn’t last long after Rhaenyra’s death. The Black armies are closing in, and eventually the members of his own faction poison him to stop further destruction. Then, Cregan Stark arrives in King’s Landing and takes control, spending six days in judgment of those who caused the chaos.

That aftermath is significant because someone needs to tidy up the vast mess the Targaryens left behind. Eventually, Rhaenyra’s son Aegon III is crowned king. At this time, the majority of the key players behind the Dance have passed away.

That’s why the ending is so ironic. Aegon II actually outlives Rhaenyra, giving the impression that the Greens won. However, their win is hollow. Aegon III is a member of Rhaenyra’s bloodline, and the Targaryen bloodline is a continuation of her.

In the end, Rhaenyra loses the war, but her descendants inherit the future she was fighting for. And that makes the Dance even more tragic: almost everyone destroys themselves in the fight for the throne, while the legacy of the person who lost ultimately survives.
