‘House Of The Dragon’: Why Did Alicent Hightower Betray Rhaenyra Targaryen?

The HBO series, ‘House of the Dragon‘ premiered in mid-August to the world audience. Now with the second episode aired, viewers are deeply engrossed in this prequel. With the sequel show, ‘Game of Thrones‘, the world created by George R.R. Martin seems to have enticed readers and viewers and continues to do so with the ‘House of the Dragon‘. The debut episode, ‘The Heirs of the Dragon‘ became one of the highest viewed premieres among all the HBO series.

What is the prequel all about? The events portrayed goes back to about 200 years before the happenings of the parent show. The epic high fantasy prudes into the history of the House Targaryen and the beef that leads to the war, Dance of Dragons. The first season would revolve around the two main women characters Queen Alicent Hightower and Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. How did these childhood companions become archenemies?

House Of The Dragon’: Rhaenyra Targaryen And Alicent Hightower

With the closeness between their fathers and families, these two girls, Rhaenyra and Alicent have a very close relationship. Through planned on-screen chemistry, both characters seem to have a relationship dwindling between platonic and romantic. But the downfall of their closeness can be seen with the death of Rhaenyra’s mother and her newborn son. With pressures from her father Otto Highwater, Alicent approaches King Viserys and seduces him into marriage. Here on starts the rivalry between the two women.

King Viserys had proclaimed Princess Rhaenyra as the rightful heir to the throne in the absence of a son. But this claim crumbles as Alicent gives birth to a son, Aegon II. Thus the dispute starts, which splits House Targaryen and also leads to the civil war. Hence one can say that Alicent did betray her friend and became the heart cause of the further troubles that followed.

The Greens And The Blacks

The war, dubbed Dance of Dragons, happens between the two councils of the House Targaryens. The Greens were the council initially headed by the second wife of King Viserys, Queen Alicent Hightower who supported the crowning of her son, Prince Aegon II as the King. While the Blacks were the council that supported Princess Rhaenyra being instated as the head of Targaryens. The councils were named Green and Black with respect to the colors worn by the Queen and Princess to the anniversary tournament earlier. Thus the councils began their long battles.
