‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ already gives Harry one of the series’ most emotional moments when Voldemort seemingly kills him in the Forbidden Forest. But the scene could have hit much harder with one simple change: adding a single chapter before the story takes us to King’s Cross.
Instead of immediately revealing that Harry survived, the book could have made readers genuinely believe he was dead, showing the aftermath through the eyes of the people who loved him most.
Hagrid, Hermione, and Ginny Could Have Broken Our Hearts
The chapter could begin with Hagrid, forced to carry Harry’s body back to Hogwarts after watching him seemingly die. His memories would naturally return to the first time he carried Harry, taking him away from Godric’s Hollow and eventually delivering him to the Dursleys. Now, he would be carrying Harry in the opposite direction for what he believes is the final time.
That full-circle moment alone would be devastating. Hermione’s perspective could follow as she slowly realizes what Harry has done. His strange behavior, his final instructions to Neville, and Voldemort calling him into the forest would suddenly click into place.
Then comes Ginny. Seeing Harry’s body could bring back memories of their childhood, the Chamber of Secrets, and their first kiss. She would suddenly understand that every future she imagined with Harry has disappeared. Her grief could turn into anger when Voldemort insults Harry, forcing Arthur to stop her from throwing away her own life.
Neville Finally Becomes The Hero Harry Believed He Could Be
Neville’s perspective would be the perfect ending. He sees Hermione crying, Ginny being restrained, and Voldemort celebrating. But instead of breaking, something finally clicks. Neville has spent his entire life wondering whether he could ever live up to his parents.

Harry’s death could finally teach him that being a hero isn’t about being chosen or naturally gifted. It’s about choosing to stand up when everyone else is terrified. So when Voldemort offers Neville a place among the Death Eaters, Neville refuses. He steps forward and becomes the person Harry always believed he could be.
Then Voldemort places the Sorting Hat on Neville’s head and sets it on fire. Cut to King’s Cross. That one extra chapter would make Harry’s survival feel like an actual miracle rather than a twist the reader already knows is coming.
