‘Squid Game’ Director Reveals Why He’s Doing A Sequel Despite Losing His Teeth Due To Stress

Hwang Dong-hyuk’s Squid Game ended up becoming one of the biggest shows Netflix has ever made. The Korean show, that was based on a survival game between participants working for a big prize, was also later made into a reality show with a huge prize of 4.56 million dollars.

As the new season of the show is all set to release, Hwang talked about how money played a crucial role in his decision to work on the idea. Here’s what he said.

Despite losing “eight or nine” teeth due to stress during the first season of the show, ‘Squid Game‘ creator Hwang Dong-hyuk stated that money was his primary driving force for creating Season 2 of the popular Netflix series.

Hwang claimed that he had vowed to never do another season of the show because of the negative impact it was having on his health and stress levels. However, he ultimately decided against it because of the potential financial gains he can earn from a sequel.

“Even though the first series was such a huge global success, honestly I didn’t make much. So doing the second series will help compensate me for the success of the first one too,” he told the BBC, adding that the story wasn’t finished in the first season and it deserved a sequel too.

After winning at the end of Season 1, Seong Gi-hun, also known as Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae), returns to the Squid Game in Season 2. Now that he knows the real goal of the game, he tries to spare other players’ lives while persuading them to opt out and put an end to the game permanently.

With the deaths of all the players except for Gi-hun at the end of the ninth and last episode (spoiler alert), people had anticipated that he would be the only character from season one to return for season two. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show’s creator and director, revealed more info on the second season on June 12, 2022, in a message to fans that was shared on social media.

The Front Man, Lee Byung-hun’s dreadful game overseer, would also make a comeback, he revealed. Wi Ha-joon’s Hwang Jun-ho, the investigator whose fate was unclear after he was shot and went off a cliff, would also return, the streamer later added.

When asked by The Hollywood Reporter what’s in store for the second season, Hwang said, “There will naturally be a flow of events that will lead all the way to the end of the season. I can’t share any details yet, but you know that Seong Gi-hun has become a totally new person by the end of season one, so season two is going to be about what that new Gi-hun is going to do and how things will unfold with this new kind of character.”
