About Margaret Atwood’s Dystopian Classic That Inspired The Series

The book is set in a future dystopian world where America has been taken over by an oppressive regime. The story revolves around Offred – the patronymic name provided by the new regime in the Republic of Gilead since she is a handmaid. It’s an ominous setting where women are given specific roles and rules, and have their every move watched.

The Handmaids are women who are forced to have children with men of high social status – the Commanders – whose wives are infertile. They are nothing more than their biological parts and have to endure rapes, mental harassment and a kind of imprisonment.

The book has been banned many a times in many places since its first publication, but continues to be a commentary on misogyny and a fierce take on politics.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ season 5 will premiere on Hulu on September 14.
