Alexis Bledel has announced her departure from the critically acclaimed Hulu drama, “The Handmaid’s Tale“. The show is currently gearing up for Season 5.
“After much thought, I felt I had to step away from The Handmaid’s Tale at this time.” Alexis shared in a statement with Variety. “I am forever grateful to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily, and to Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew for their support,” she added.
Alexis Bledel Exits ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’
Alexis co-starred beside the award-winning actress, Elisabeth Moss in the series, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale‘. Adapted from a futuristic dystopian book of the same name written by Margaret Atwood, the show debuted on Hulu in 2017.
She played one of the main cast members and her character’s name was Emily, aka Ofglen – a fellow handmaid who’s trapped in Gilead along with Moss’ June/Offred. Her storyline in Season 1 was that she was caught having an affair with a woman and was surgically mutilated. In Season 2, she was sent to the colonies but eventually escaped Gilead and reached Canada. Emily reunited with June in Season 4.
No release date for the show’s fifth season has been announced yet.
Bledel’s Emmy Win
Alexis Bledel has been praised for her role in the series. She has earned four Emmy nominations for the same. In 2017, she swept an Emmy for outstanding guest actress in a drama.
Before this, she was seen on the show “Gilmore Girls“. It’s a show where she played Lorelai’s brainy daughter Rory Gilmore. She also reprised the role for Netflix’s 2016 revival of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.
