If you’re a ‘Schitt’s Creek‘ fan, you already know the show delivers some of the best awkward, messy, laugh-out-loud moments on TV. But one early scene hits differently once you hear Eugene Levy’s recent confession about what really happened behind the camera.
Levy has opened up about the story behind it, and it wasn’t just written for the plot or for a quick laugh. It came from a very specific place. The fun fact is that Eugene was genuinely surprised when he figured it out.
‘Schitt’s Creek’: A Father-Son Moment Inspired “The Drip” Episode

Long before that huge Emmy sweep in 2020, Schitt’s Creek won fans over with the Rose family’s downfall-turned-fresh start. Eugene and Dan Levy created the show together, building a world where Johnny and Moira, plus David and Alexis, had to rebuild their lives in the small town Johnny once bought as a joke.

Because a real father and son ran the writers’ room, a lot of their personal quirks slipped into the show. And Eugene recently shared one of those details: Dan always knew how particular he was about his hair. He explained to Kelly Clarkson that he wasn’t being vain; his hair was just tough to manage, and he liked keeping it neat for filming.
Little did he know that this tiny detail would become a major part of a season-one episode. And at the time, he had no clue what Dan was planning.
Dan Levy Just Wanted To Annoy His Father

Eugene revealed that Dan used his hair sensitivity as inspiration for the episode “The Drip” in season one. In the scene, Johnny wakes up soaked because a leak in the motel ceiling drips right onto him all night. Eugene remembered reading the script and reacting with an annoyed laugh, wondering why the water had to hit him directly on the head, and of all things, on his hair.

He filmed the scene anyway, but it ended up being even more uncomfortable than he expected. Eugene said he took a break, checked a little hand mirror, and thought the wet look was fine. But then he heard Dan saying it should look “more wet.” Eugene said he questioned it, and Dan insisted the comedy wouldn’t work unless his hair looked absolutely drenched.
Kelly Clarkson joked that it sounded like payback for something, maybe a forgotten Christmas present. Eugene laughed and said he still had no idea what the “revenge” was for, especially since their family is Jewish, but he believed Dan definitely got it from somewhere.
Even though he felt miserable filming the scene, Eugene admitted he still had fun with it. He said he enjoyed watching Dan laugh at how soaked he looked, even if the joke was at his expense. More than anything, it gave fans a peek into how the Levys worked: lots of love, lots of teasing, and sometimes writing an entire scene just to mess with Dad.
