Since the news of his exit from the Netflix show surfaced, Patterson has now spoken openly about what really happened. The actor has finally addressed the situation himself and explained the reasons behind his unexpected decision to leave the show.
Scott Patterson Explains Why He Left ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’
Given how important Sully is to Maggie’s story in ‘Sullivan’s Crossing,’ Patterson’s exit naturally came as a surprise. In March 2026, reports confirmed that the actor would not return to the series. Shortly afterward, Patterson addressed the situation through Instagram and shared his personal perspective on the decision.

Patterson began his statement by reflecting on how much the character meant to him. “Every actor knows what it’s like to fall in love with a character and a story. I fell in love with Sully and have nothing but fondness for him,” Patterson says. “The creative differences were becoming untenable, and I just sadly realised that the show was not something that I could agree to continue.”
Patterson said he remained deeply invested in the character. “I really enjoyed Sully and fought for his voice and his character,” he added. “The richness and depth of Sully, whom the fans of the books all know and love, is so multi-layered and interesting.”
Storyline Developments That Led To Sully’s Absence in Season 4
Story developments during Season 3 had already placed Sully away from ‘Sullivan’s Crossing‘ before Patterson’s exit became public. The season, which began streaming on Netflix in August 2025, ended with major twists affecting several characters. The most dramatic moment involved Maggie and Cal’s relationship. It faced serious trouble after Maggie’s secret husband unexpectedly appeared in town.

His sudden arrival complicated Maggie’s future plans and created a major cliffhanger heading into the next season. At the same time, Sully left the campground and traveled to Ireland alongside his girlfriend, beginning a new stage in his life. As a result, the storyline had already created a natural explanation for his absence.
Showrunner and executive producer Roma Roth previously explained how the story would move forward in the next season. “Season 3 of ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ ended with Sully leaving for Ireland, beginning a new chapter in his life. Season 4 picks up the next day, with Sully still overseas. While he isn’t physically present in this season, the character remains an important part of the world with the potential to be included in future seasons should that align with the ongoing creative,” Roth said.
Patterson, however, pushed back on the idea that the show simply moved on from him. “It’s unfortunate that it is now being implied that they moved on from me/Sully when the fact is the complete opposite, and those who sadly already have spoken out are also fully aware of this fact, and yet chose to say otherwise,” Patterson’s statement continues.
He added, “I was not intending to make any statement, but the fans of the books and the show deserve to know the truth, as I have always been respectful of those who support this industry by watching and loving these characters we are so dang lucky and blessed to portray and bring to life.”
Right now, ‘Sullivan’s Crossing‘ continues into its next season without Sully appearing on screen. However, Patterson wants fans to understand that he will always stand by the truth while continuing to support the world of ‘Sullivan’s Crossing‘.
