Who Are The Hashira?
The Hashira translates as pillars. This translation is very appropriate as the Hashira are the strongest demon slayers. It is their existence that sustains and protects the entire demon slayer organization. There are nine Hashira currently and one leader Kagaya Ubuyashiki. The nine Hashira are all very different and unique but if there is anything in common among them, it is the respect they hold for their leader. The Hashira listen to every order given by their leader and rarely question it.
Each Hashira is given a separate territory and region to patrol and deal with if the threats of demons arise. They do not engage in combat on every occasion, they only fight if the threat is too much for the lower-ranking demon slayers to handle. For any demon slayer to join the Hashira, he must kill 50 demons, defeat a member of the twelve moons of Muzan or become a Tsuguko of a Hashira. All three methods are difficult but very rewarding.
Can There Only Be Nine Hashira At A Time?
Since the start of ‘Demon Slayer,’ there have been only nine Hashira. There have been various users of different breathing styles in the nine pillars. But water Hashira and flame Hashira has always been a part of them. Once a Hashira is killed in combat, another demon slayer replaces him. The question is whether there can be more than nine Hashira at one time.
It has never been mentioned explicitly in the manga or the anime about the number of Hashira that can exist at a single time. This may entail that there is no set number and there can be more than nine Hashira, but there are nine because of their capabilities.
Another viewpoint of the fans and viewers is that there can only be nine Hashira. Rather than due to a set of rules or regulations, it is more due to symbolism. This is because there are nine strokes in the Kanji of the word Hashira. Since there are a total of nine strokes in the word, there are also nine Hashira that are the pillars of the demon slayer corps.
