What Is Berserk?
‘Berserk’ is a dark fantasy anime that is set in a dystopian world. It has a manga under the same name written by Kentaro Miura. It follows the story of a mercenary named Guts. Upon killing a man in self-defense, Guts is driven out of the band of mercenaries by the others.
Whilst traveling alone, Guts encounters a group of mercenaries called the Band of the Hawks. The commander of the band of the Hawks challenges Guts and wagers that if Guts loses, he would join their band. Guts, unfortunately, loses the wager and has to join the band.
Once he leaves the band, and after coming back after a year, he finds out that Griffith, the commander, is in prison. He rescues Griffith and executes the people torturing him. Afterward, in a shocking turn of events, Guts finds out that all of the members of the band of the Hawks died except for Casca, Griffith, and himself.
Why Is Judeau’s Story Tragic And Inspiring?
Judeau was the first ally Guts made upon joining the band of the Hawks. He is quite young and used to be a part of a circus before joining the band. Judeau joined the band because of Griffith but he never idolized the man after joining. He saw Griffith as a man who was too obsessed with his dream and would do anything to achieve it.
Judeau also knew of Casca’s feelings for Griffth. He also knew that Griffith would never return those feelings. The romantic tension between Casca and Guts was also quite apparent to him. Because of these two reasons, he never acted on the feelings he had for Casca.
After the eclipse, when the band members started dying one by one, Casca and he were left. Casca gave up hope, but it was Judeau who got her to fight. It was also Judeau who gave up his life for Casca’s in an instant when she was caught by a monster. He could have left, but he chose to save the woman he loves knowing that she will never return his feelings.
This is tragic yet inspiring as this was the one and only time when Judeau allowed himself to act on his feelings. Even when he was dying, he couldn’t reveal his feelings to Casca. It was tragic that despite being the kind of person to say what he wants, he wasn’t able to say something important to the one person he wanted to. This is why his story is both tragic and inspiring.
