‘Demon Slayer’ has become one of the most popular anime of all time. The anime has not only taken over the shonen category but anime in general. The anime is famous for its heroes, the Hashira in particular. However, fans love the villains in the series just as much, if not more. Kibutsuji Muzan is one character that the fans are quite curious about.

The demon king is quite feared by the heroes and his demons alike. The demons that Muzan himself created aren’t allowed to say his name. This makes fans curious about the reason behind this rule. Here is why.

Kibutsuji Muzan is the demon king in ‘Demon Slayer’. He is the progenitor of all the demons in the series and is the most feared character of the show. He strikes fear not only in the hearts of the demon slayer corps and Hashira but also in the hearts of his demons. Muzan was the first demon to be created. He was terminally ill when he was a human and the experiments to cure him failed. These experiments turned him into a demon.

As the king and progenitor of all the demons, Muzan can control all his demons, with four exceptions including Nezuko. His only goal currently is to live eternally. He wishes to create more demons and find out ways to conquer his weakness of the sun.

Appearance-wise, Muzan has not set physical features. He can switch bodies, sometimes becoming a beautiful woman, sometimes a muscular man, and sometimes even a child. Personality-wise, Muzan is quite cold. He has dear to him and only cares about his dreams. He is ruthless and doesn’t show emotions quite often. Muzan also doesn’t tolerate disrespect and thus, imposed the rule of the demons not speaking his name.

The demons that Kibutsuji Muzan created can’t say his name. If they dare to speak his name, the demon dies a horrific death. This is due to a curse that Muzan himself inflicted upon all of his demons. Only the trustworthy and strong demons can say his name. Some of the twelve moons can’t say his name.

A demon called Susamaru made the mistake of calling out Muzan’s name. She was battling Tamayo and she called out Muzan’s name in trying to defend his honor. Unfortunately for her, three arms sprouted out of her body and wounded her. She was severely wounded and died when the sun shone on her body.

The curse was inflicted by Kibutsuji Muzan to maintain a status hierarchy. Muzan demands utmost obedience and this is one way of ensuring respect. Another reason is safety concerns. Muzan is highly cautious and has contingency plans. He doesn’t want everyone to know his name and this way he ensures that the demons don’t speak his name. He can also find out whether one of his demons betrayed him by using this curse. This is why demons in ‘Demon Slayer’ can’t say Kibutsuji Muzan’s name.
