Unlike its sweet-sounding name ‘Fruits Basket’ is a deeply woven story of dark plots, villainous characters, grief, friendship, and love. As the story progresses, we learn the deepest secrets of the Sohma family, who is at the epicenter of the storm. Tohru Honda the main protagonist reaches the grief-stricken accursed Sohma, healing them with love and friendship.
While the twelve zodiacs reach out to her for a soothing relationship, some of the characters just don’t wish to redeem themselves. You will find that the story’s main antagonist Akito is nothing compared to who we thought of as a side character. Shigure Sohma, the carrier of the dog zodiac is far from an inferior character, he portrays himself to be.

The Real Face Of Shigure Sohma
Shigure Sohma is the very definition of an anti-villain in a story. While we thought of him as a good, caring character, he turned 360 degrees around later in the story. As the story progresses, we find him in a totally different light, from his usual laughing self. He is a rather cunning, manipulative, and evil person who twists situations in his favor to gain what he wants.
He could care less about others’ pain or emotions, all he sees is his goal. It was within his plan to include Tohru in the affairs of the Sohma family. Undoubtedly she underwent many pains and troubles because of his schemes. What makes Shigure a scary character, is his way of manipulating others. Others don’t even notice they are being used and do his bidding unknowingly.
At least Akito is perceived as a villain since the beginning. She doesn’t hesitate to reveal her ugly and cruel side, unlike Shigure. Due to his manipulation and plans, many members of the zodiac clan suffer. He knew others wanted to be free from the bonds of Akito, more specifically, he wanted Akito to be free from it. If Akito is free from all bonds, he’ll finally get her. Well, it’s a twisted love of a twisted man. Nothing more to say.
Shigure Sohma And Akito Sohma
Shigure and Akito’s relationship defines the word ‘twisted’. It’s actually way beyond twisted! To have her, Shigure hurts a number of people without any care. The two persons that got affected the most are Tohru and Kureno. In an episode, Shigure states how much he loves Akito and that sometimes he wants to spoil her while sometimes he wants to crush her to a pulp. Isn’t that scary?
Then again he did say, that he loved Akito from the moment she has in her mother’s womb. That’s kind of weirdly gross now. It does remind you of Twilight, where Jacob said a similar thing to Renesmee. However, things don’t stop at that. The thing that creeped me out the most was Shigure sleeping with Ren just to take revenge on Akito.
At one point, Akito sleeps with Kureno. Unable to handle the jealousy, Shigure sleeps with Ren, Akito’s mother. Who in their right mind sleeps with their lover’s mother just to exact revenge on them? At this point, it would be easier to say that Shigure is obsessed with Akito. Shigure is evil. It’s confirmed. But his plans also did free the zodiacs, not undermining what they had to go through because of it.
