The animeverse of ‘Fruits Basket’ comprises characters from the Chinese Zodiacs. Apart from our female lead who is a human, the rest of the characters are zodiacs who turn into their true form under given conditions. The most prominent of their conditions are – if they are weak, and if they are hugged by the opposite sex.
Just like their forms, they all possess unique personalities, where they bicker and tease every time. Our female lead plunges into the life of these zodiacs where her presence helps soothe them from the Sohma family curse. They all become deeply attached to her. Though there are twelve Chinese zodiacs, here in this article we’ll also include the cat.

The Thirteen Zodiacs Of The Sohma Family
13. Kagura (Boar)
Kagura is possessed by the twelfth spirit of the Zodiac, the boar. Just like the animal itself, she charges forward filled with full passion for Kyo (the male lead). She is quite strong, single-minded, and loves to be pampered. She is a very extroverted girl who doesn’t shy away from telling how she feels.
12. Ritsu (Monkey)
Ritsu is the ninth Zodiac, the monkey. He is a very sweet character who suffers from anxiety attacks and often shies away from speaking directly. Ritsu dresses as a woman, so fans get confused at first about his identity. He’s a talented man who always stumbles upon his words and constantly keeps apologizing for it.
11. Kureno (Rooster)
Kureno is the only character in the series who never transforms into his animal form. He broke his bond with Akito a long time ago and stopped transforming since then. Though he broke his bonds, he still was entangled in a twisted relationship with Akito.
10. Hiro (Sheep)
Hiro is one of the youngest characters in the series and is possessed by the spirit of sheep. He is a very headstrong, sharp-tongued, and intelligent person who openly shows his affection to those he cares about, especially his mom and Kisa. Though at first, he taunts Tohru, he comes to like her and grows as a character in the progressing series.
9. Isuzu (Rin – Horse)
Rin is one of the top favorite characters in Fruits Basket. She is the reincarnation of the spirit horse and is the partner of Hatsuharu. She is a wild and free-spirited animal just like her animal nature and is independent and sensitive to issues like trust and friendship. Due to her traumatic past, she refuses to open up to anyone, though she is a loyal friend when she does.
8. Ayame (Snake)
Ayame the brother of the second male lead Yuki, is the possessor of the spirit snake, the sixth house of the zodiac. He is a free-spirited person, who loves to involve himself in any and all conversations and troubles. He is continuously shown to irritate Yuki in hopes to mend their relationship. Unlike its animal form, Ayame is a sweet character who loves people he cares about.
7. Hatori (Dragon)
Ayame, Hatori, and Shigure are friends since childhood. Hatori, the dragon acts as the doctor in the series. He has a traumatic past where he had to sever bonds with his loved ones because of Akito’s antics. He is calm, collected, mature, and charismatic in nature. His sense of authority and confidence makes him look up to as someone dependable. He’s a sea horse but has a dragon heart within.
6. Kisa (Tiger)
Unlike her animal form, Kisa is a quiet and reserved girl. She does not like to speak and bites whoever comes close (just like she did with Tohru). Once she starts to trust others, she is a sweet, courageous, and vocal person who loves to be with others whom she trusts. From a cub, she develops herself into a tiger during the series, as she starts to learn to handle situations.

5. Momiji (Rabbit)
Apart from Kyo and Yuki, Momiji is the fourth spirit possessor of the Zodiac and the third closest person to Tohru. He is deeply attached to her and over time develops feelings for Tohru. His most evident personality is of life and vitality as he is always full of energy and literally jumping from one situation to another. He is compassionate, popular, and perceptive yet immature at times.
4. Hatsuharu (Ox)
Hatsuharu, shortly known as Haru is the possessor of the spirit Ox, and is the partner of Rin. he performs the role of a big brother of the family and has twin personalities. In his white form, he is a calm and kind person, whereas he switches to his aggressive and stubborn self during black Haru mode. He is mature in nature and he handles situations accordingly. Haru was also shown deeply attached to Yuki.
3. Shigure (Dog)
Shigure is the possessor of the eleventh spirit of the zodiac, the dog. He is a playful, generous, kind yet dangerous schemer. Unlike the dog form, he is rather twisted and uses whatever method he can to get what he wants. His personality made quite a few fans dislike him, but in the end, his endeavors, though wrong, did good to others.
2. Yuki (Rat)
Yuki [possessed by the ran spirited animal, is one of the characters who suffered greatly at the hands of Akito. Just like his spirit animal, he is smart, quick-witted, and extremely popular in his school. He always bickers with Kyo and seems to defeat him in a duel all the time. He is the second lead of the story who finds his own happiness and grows as a character throughout the series.
1. Kyo (Cat)
The cat spirit is not included in the Chinese zodiac according to the legend. He and the God (Akira/Akito) are excluded from the zodiac family. Kyo possesses the exact same traits as his cat personality. He likes to lounge whenever he finds time, he is nimble, short-tempered, earnest, and slow to trust people. It takes quite a while for Kyo to get used to Tohru and befriend her. He never shows his true feelings, though he is easy to blush and turns red.
