‘Natsume Yuujinchou’ is a popular 2005 anime that is still capable of stealing the hearts of anime fans worldwide. It’s a unique anime with an interesting plot making it all the more worthwhile. The story revolves around a teenage boy named Natsume and his journey with a ‘yokai’.
After Natsume’s parents died, the child has been shifting from one home to another unable to find his roots. On his last adoption by a couple, Natsume finds his life taking a scary and exciting new turn. He often gets attacked by strange yokai, a.k.a, ghosts, and needs saving from his ‘master,’ a fox yokai.

What Is The Book Of Friends?
Since the start of the anime, we see Natsume Takashi, the protagonist of the story being chased by two Yokai’s. Only he can see these ghostly creatures and is being haunted by them since a young age. They were also the reason why he had to shuffle through so many adoption processes since his teenage.
Natsume possesses a worn-out book with names inscribed on it. Later through the fox yokai, Madara we come to know that the book belonged to Natsume’s grandmother. She just like him could see the spirits. Afraid of her antics, her classmates avoided her. She fought with Yokai’s and made them her slaves after asking them to write their names in the book.

After Reiko’s death, Natsume got hold of the book and became its sole possessor. If anyone who had Reiko’s blood called out the Yokai’s name, they have to come to her and do her bidding. Now Natsume possessing this power attracted many Yokai, who sought revenge. Though most of them just wanted to be free and to have their names back.

Who Was Its Owner?
Before Natsume go hold of the book, his grandmother Natsume Reiko was the owner of the book. The book contains immense power as it holds the Yokai’s as its slave. One can easily call a Yokai and force them to do their bidding.

Fortunately or unfortunately, Reiko never used the Yokai’s name after noting them down in the ‘Book of Friends’. This sometimes enraged them. Yokai also feels emotions like hurt and loneliness. They wanted Reiko to call out for them, and be their friend, but she never did reach out. After old age she passed away, leaving the power in Natsume’s hand.
