In ‘One Piece’ each of the important characters especially the Straw Hats crew focuses on their backstory, showing how they are related to future events. We get acquainted with Nami’s backstory at the very beginning of the series where we meet the vicious pirate Arlong and his crew. As you can guess, Luffy completely destroys their base freeing Nami from his shackles.
Arlong’s name once again pops up at the beginning of the Fishman Island arc where we once again say ‘hello’ to Hachi or Hatchan. The sweet little octopus becomes captive to one of the slave traders when Luffy and his crew save him. Nevertheless, that doesn’t end the flashbacks of Arlong’s reign. Jinbe’s connection to Arlong shocks Nami while an infuriated Sanji gets ready to beat him out for his previous deeds.

Why Did Jibe Apologize To Nami?
Jinbe was one of the Warlords of the Sea before he got captured and later joined the Big Mom pirates. His relationship with Arlong angered Sanji and he reminded Jinbe to speak carefully before he bashes him out. Moreover, when Hatchi and Jinbe said they knew Arlong, Nami had horrible flashbacks of her time as a member of the Arlong crew.
Arlong totally messed up Nami’s life. Her time at Arlong Park is one of the most dreading pasts that Nami will probably remember for the rest of her life. Knowing how Arlong treated Nami and her hometown island, Jinbe started crying and saying sorry to her. He admitted that it was part of his fault that Arlong even got to East Blue.
Arlong, Hatchi, and a few of the other pirates were part of the Sun Pirate group led by Fisher Man. Jinbe was also a part of that group. After the group disbanded, Arlong got captured by the Marines while Jinbe joined the ranks of one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea.
Being one of the top powers, he released Arlong from the shackles, leading him to take over East Blue and continue his tortuous reign. Even though Jinbe knew what Arlong was capable of doing, he did not keep an update on him nor did he try to do anything to stop Arlong in his tracks. He says sorry to Nami after he finds out how Arlong treated Nami.
How Did Jinbe Know Arlong?
Jinbe, Arlong, and Hatchi knew each other since they were kids. They often used to resurface near Sabaody Island and envied the humans living on land. They wanted to share the space and become a part of that society. Unfortunately, the humans thought of Fishmen as pests and someone infested with diseases, a race inferior to them.
They were ostracized by the humans and even taken captive as the World Noble’s slaves. The former Queen of Fishman Island Otohime and Fisher Tiger did their best to maintain the same rights as humans and to save the captured slaves. Tiger after saving Arlong, Jinbe, and the rest of the Fishman, as well as humans (who were kept captive) marked them with his own pirate sign, the Sun.
Thus Fisher Tiger formed the Sun pirates with the escaped slaves. Later after his death, the group disbanded. Jinbe joined the Seven Warlords of the Sea, while Arlong separated and formed his own pirate group along with Hatchi and other members. Jinbe feels that he is somewhat responsible for Arlong’s rampant in the East Blue as he failed to stop him.
