10 Strongest ‘Demon Slayer’ Characters, Ranked

In Short
  • The Demon Slayer universe has a complex power hierarchy based on strength, speed, and unique abilities.
  • The top characters include both Hashira and Upper Rank demons, with Yoriichi Tsugikuni being the strongest.
  • Muzan Kibutsuji, the Demon King, is nearly invincible due to his regeneration and control over other demons.

The Demon Slayer universe features an intense power hierarchy that depends on raw strength, speed, regeneration, breathing styles (for Hashira) and Blood Demon Arts (for demons). While anime lovers already know that the Upper Rank demons are far more powerful than all the Hashira combined, this ranking focuses on peak forms of both Hashira and Demons.

Even though debates still exist in the fandom, a clear consensus from battles points to a clear top tier. Here are the top 10 strongest characters in Demon Slayer, along with explanations of their feats and why they rank where they do.

10. Giyu Tomioka (Water Hashira)

The least flashy of all Hashira in the series, Giyu Tomioka stands as one of the most powerful characters in Demon Slayer. With a never-give-up attitude, strong grit, and his self-created Eleventh form, ‘Dead Calm,’ Giyu mastered an elite defensive technique that barely any other Hashira possesses.

He almost single-handedly pushed Akaza to his limits and also managed to hold on his own against Muzan.

9. Obanai Iguro (Serpent Hashira)

Even though he was partially blind in one eye, Obanai Iguro remained one of the deadliest and strongest characters in Demon Slayer. His aggressive Serpent Breathing style, combined with the help of his pet snake Kaburamaru, made him an extremely dangerous fighter.

During the final battle against Muzan, Obanai played a pivotal role, landing critical hits on the Demon King and also fought alongside his love interest, Mitsuri, against the Upper Rank demons.

8. Sanemi Shinazugawa (Wind Hashira)

The second strongest Hashira in Demon Slayer, Sanemi Shinazugawa stands out for his sheer aggressive power, Wind Breathing techniques, unpredictability, and fierce fighting style. His rare Marechi blood, which is highly toxic to the demons, further enhances his threat to them.

During the Infinity Castle Arc, Sanemi fought relentlessly against Kokushibo despite suffering critical injuries and also played a crucial role in the final battle against Muzan.

7. Tanjiro Kamado (Water and Sun Breathing Master)

The show’s main protagonist, Tanjiro Kamado, evolves dramatically throughout the anime series. Although he was originally trained as a Water Breathing Demon Slayer, he later mastered Hinokami Kagura, an offshoot of the Sun Breathing style. He awakened his Demon Slayer mark earlier than most Hashiras and used both breathing styles interchangeably while fighting the Upper Ranked Demons.

During the Infinity Castle Arc, he played a major role in defeating Akaza alongside Giyu and also fought fiercely against Muzan in the final battle. He even briefly became the Demon King with sunlight immunity before reverting.

6. Akaza (Demon – Upper Rank Three)

One of the most beloved characters in the series, Akaza, also stands as one of the most terrifying and strongest figures in Demon Slayer. His martial arts background and Destructive Death techniques (a form of Blood Demon Art) allow him to sense the fighting spirit of his opponents and counter their attacks.

He killed the Flame Hashira, Rengoku Kyojuro, with ease and later fought both Giyu and Tanjiro during the Infinity Castle battle. However, he refused to eat women and ultimately chose to end his life after remembering his tragic past, giving his character a sad but fitting send-off.

5. Doma (Demon – Upper Rank Two)

Doma’s unhinged ruthlessness, combined with his casual demeanor, is what makes him different from other Upper Rank demons in Demon Slayer. His Blood Demon Art allows him to create ice constructs, lotuses and freezing mist that can easily kill his opponents.

During the Infinity Castle fight, he absorbed the Insect Hashira, Shinobu Kocho and also fought against two other demon slayers – Kanao and Inosuke. His fan-based attacks and instant regeneration make him extremely versatile, while his obsession with eating women makes him one of the coldest characters in the series.

4. Gyomei Himejima (Stone Hashira)

Although fully blind, Gyomei Himejima is considered the most powerful current Hashira in the Demon Slayer series. His powerful Stone Breathing allows him to wield an axe and a flail with incredible precision, and he even mastered the Transparent World before awakening his Demon Slayer mark.

During the final battle, he played an important role in weakening Muzan and also earned praise for his immense strength from Kokushibo during the battle inside the Infinity Castle.

3. Kokushibo (Demon – Upper Rank One)

Once known as Michikatsu Tsugikuni, the oldest twin brother of Yoriichi, he later became the bloodthirsty and terrifying demon Kokushibo out of jealousy and fear of aging. With over 400 years of experience, the Moon Breathing style and six eyes that grant near-perfect perception, including access to the Transparent World, Kokushibo effortlessly killed several Hashira-level Demon Slayers.

Only a team of marked Hashiras, including Muichiro, Sanemi, and Genya, barely managed to kill him during the fight inside Infinity Castle, after he lost focus due to self-loathing.

2. Muzan Kibutsuji (Demon King)

Muzan Kibutsuji is the creator of all demons and is the strongest of them. His god-like regeneration, incredible speed and poison attacks make him almost impossible to kill. He can not only control the minds of demons but also turn any normal human into a demon with a single touch.

Muzan wiped out almost all the Demon Slayers, but it took the combined efforts of the Hashira, marked Demon Slayers and Tanjiro to finally defeat him. Only Yorichii ever truly threatened his life, forcing him to flee in terror.

1. Yoriichi Tsugikuni (Sun Hashira)

Yoriichi stands undisputed as the pinnacle of power in the entire Demon Slayer series. As the creator of the most powerful Sun Breathing technique, he nearly killed Muzan alone during their only encounter. Even in old age, Yoriichi effortlessly overwhelmed Muzan, slicing his body into pieces and inflicting wounds that scarred him permanently.

No other character in Demon Slayer, human or demon, has replicated this level of dominance. He even outclassed his brother Kokushibo and inspired every other breathing technique.
