The Hashira is the strongest of the demon slayer corps. These Hashira are very well respected by the other demon slayers and are feared by the demons. They are the biggest obstacle for Muzan and his twelve kizuki. The entire demon slayer organization hangs on their shoulders.

There are currently nine Hashira, and ever since the start of the demon slayer corps, there have been nine Hashira. Each of these Hashira have a distinct breathing style and some of these breathing styles are their creations. However, ever since the start, water Hashira and fire Hashira have been a part of the nine Hashira.

According to most fans, the strongest Hashira in the current timeline is Gyomei and the weakest is Shinobu. However, even the weak Hashira is far stronger than any swordsman. The Hashira are at the top of the hierarchy, the only person above them is the head of the Ubuyashiki family. The two ways of becoming a Hashira are either killing over 50 demons or killing a member of the twelve kizuki. The other method is becoming the Tsuguko of a Hashira. Both of the methods are very difficult and only the strong individuals can become a Hashira.

As mentioned above, one method of becoming a Hashira is by becoming a Tsuguko of one of the Hashira. A Tsuguko is essentially a disciple of the Hashira, and they are trained to become the next Hashira. Generally, the Tsuguko and the Hashira utilize the same breathing style, but it is not a necessity. The disciple becomes the Hashira if the current Hashira retires or if they die in combat.

A Hashira can select his or her Tsuguko in two ways. One way is through an application. A demon slayer can apply to become a Tsuguko of a particular Hashira. The Hashira can choose to deny or accept their invitation based on the applicant’s strength, and the requirements the Hashira has. Another way of choosing a Tsuguko is by tracking someone’s progress. A Hashira has the freedom to handpick a Tsuguko out of the batch, or pick a swordsman and train them to be their successor.

Currently, Shinobu Kocho, the insect Hashira, is the one who has a Tsuguko. Kanao Tsuyuri is her Tsuguko. In addition to that, Tengen Uzui mentioned during the entertainment district arc that he considers Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke to be his Tsuguko. This means he thinks that they have enough potential to become Hashira. This is how the Hashira choose their successors.
