What Is Luffy’s Gear 5 Transformation In ‘One Piece’? How Powerful Is He In This Form?

The main character of Eiichiro Oda’s ‘One Piece,’ Monkey D. Luffy, sets off on a quest to become the Pirate King during the Great Pirate Era. With the help of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, a Devil Fruit with immense strength, Luffy transformed into a rubber man and thereafter grew exceedingly strong. Through the years, Luffy has developed his abilities by making what he refers to as “gears”. Luffy’s gear 5 boosted him with a massive power-up which was really required as the show is almost at its end.

Luffy created his Gear Second and Gear Third in the Enies Lobby arc. Luffy developed the concept of Gear Fourth with numerous forms after the two-year time jump. He was able to defeat some of the most formidable opponents on the seas because of all these fantastic power-ups, but it wasn’t until the Wano Country arc that he truly reached his peak. Luffy ultimately used Gear 5, which is his most powerful transformation ever and reportedly represents him at his best, in the battle with Kaido.

    What Is Gear 5?

    Luffy’s Gear 5

Luffy in his gear 5 does not use any fundamental skill of his devil fruit. The real name of Luffy’s Devil Fruit, the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, served as the inspiration for Gear 5. After losing to Kaido three times, Luffy was able to awaken his Devil Fruit during the Wano Country storyline. This somehow enabled his Devil Fruit to emerge and finally surpass its limitations. Due to the fact that Luffy’s Devil Fruit is actually a Mythical Zoan and not a Paramecia, it gave him a brand-new transformation instead, which, in classic Luffy fashion, he named Gear 5.

In this form, Luffy transforms into an all-white being that resembles the “Sun God” Nika. In this form, Luffy’s eyebrows are similar to Sanji’s. Most notably, Luffy enters this stage as a “Warrior of Liberation,” gaining even greater physical freedom and being able to use all of his creative fighting abilities.

How Powerful Is He In This Form?

    Luffy’s Gear 5

Being a Mythical Zoan grants Luffy a transformation that is far more powerful than anything he has ever accessed. He can only use the full potential of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, in this form. Luffy can simply change the size of his body without even utilizing air because his rubber is harder than previously. At his peak, he can even effortlessly transform himself into a gigantic, which only serves to highlight how absurd his Devil Fruit actually is. Luffy’s body is also so pliable that it can withstand deadly blows and just adjust to them.

Luffy has the ability to instantly convert everything around him into rubber, but he doesn’t stop there. No substance-based Paramecia Devil Fruit awakening user has yet managed to convert other people into rubber when touched, but Luffy can do it. Luffy demonstrated the ability to convert anything he touches into rubber in his battle with Kaido, allowing him to fight with much more freedom. Kaido could be turned into rubber by Luffy, which would cause internal damage. He was even capable of catapulting himself out of his mouth by spreading his arms from his eyes.

When wearing Gear 5, Luffy appeared to have the power to transform inanimate objects like lightning into rubber. Luffy demonstrated the ability to grab a lightning bolt itself at the end of ‘One Piece’ Chapter 1046 by supposedly turning it into rubber. Despite Kaido’s immense might, it is exceedingly challenging to engage such a monster in a fight. With the help of his Gear 5, Luffy can perform some of the most absurd actions in the narrative, including expanding his fist to the size of an island.
