Why Does Urokodaki Sakonji Never Take Off His Mask In ‘Demon Slayer’?

‘Demon slayer’ is one of the most popular new-gen shonen anime. The plot of the anime is similar to much shonen anime with the MC’s parents and family being killed and him swearing vengeance on the perpetrator. It is, however, the execution of the said plot that also sets it apart from the rest of the shounen animes.

The anime focuses more on the characters than on the plot. In Tanjiro’s, (the MC) case, he is more focused on getting his sister’s humanity back than he is on getting revenge. Even the supporting characters have their own back stories which are quite emotional and resonate with the fans. One character that the fans have liked is Urokodaki Sakonji, read more to find out about him.

Sakonji Urokodaki, who once served as the Water Hashira, is a retired member of the Demon Slayer Corps. He has trained Giyu Tomioka, Tanjiro Kamado, Sabito, and Makomo, making him the primary practitioner of Water Breathing.

Despite first giving the impression of being a gruff, cranky old guy, this personality is incredibly caring. One of the few Demon Slayer Corps figures to trust Nezuko to never eat a human fully, he pushes his trainees hard but also loves them and sees them as family. Likewise, he has complete faith that Tanjiro will discover a means to bring back her humanity.

Urokodaki is always seen wearing a mask that has a nasty face on it. Many fans have speculated the reason for him wearing the said mask. Some say it is because most of the students have died and Sakonji is an ardent believer that a warrior should not show his emotions and that he wears the mask to hide his feelings from the world.

As accurate and logical as the above-mentioned reasoning may sound, it is not the actual reason for him wearing the mask. Uokodaki Sakonji has a very gentle face as mentioned by Tanjiro and because of the said face, he was never taken seriously by demons. As a Hashira, he could not afford demons not taking him seriously and started donning that mask so that demons and his fellow swordsmen would take him seriously. This is also the reason why he doesn’t take off the mask.
