Steve Martin Defends Jo Koy For Taking On The “Toughest Gig In Show Business” Amid Golden Globes Backlash

The Golden Globes that concluded on Sunday left behind many reasons for the people to talk about. One chief reason for all the gossip that emerged was the ceremony host Jo Koy. In his first-ever gig on a huge platform, the comedian seemingly put in his best effort but failed to impress his audience.

Jo Koy did not hold back when it came to taking a dig at the biggest of celebrities present in the audience. From singing sensation Taylor Swift to ‘The Killers of the Flower Moon‘ actor Robert De Niro, Jo Koy did not spare anyone. He even went so far as to criticize the superhits of the year including ‘Barbie‘, ‘Oppenheimer‘ and ‘Maestro‘ among others. While many criticized him for his “inappropriate” humor, there are some who have spoken up in Koy’s favor.

The spotlight that comes with hosting a ceremony as big as the Golden Globes, the fame can be as unforgiving as it is dazzling. And Jo Koy seemingly knows it better than anyone else. While most of Hollywood and the world are busy criticizing the comedian for his comedy on the Golden Globes stage, some seasoned hosts have come forward in his support.

In the not-so-favorable aftermath of Jo Koy’s hosting stint at the Golden Globes, he’s found allies in seasoned hosts Steve Martin and Whoopi Goldberg. Martin, a three-time Academy Awards host, took to Threads to share his support for Koy.

I tip my hat to anyone who steps out on stage to host a live awards show. It’s a very difficult job and not for the squeamish. I know because I’m still throwing up from the last time I did it in 2010,” he wrote in his threads post.

Martin added a tinge of signature humorous style to the post. “So, Congratulations to Jo Koy, who took on the toughest gig in show business, hit, missed, was light on his feet, and now has twenty minutes of new material for his stand-up!” he wrote further.

Another seasoned host as well as an Oscar alum, Whoopi Goldberg also chimed in in Koy’s support. Speaking to The View, Goldberg noted how relentless the hosting gigs can be. “These hosting gigs are brutal. They’re just brutal. If you don’t know the room, if you’ve not been in these rooms before and you’re thrust out there, it’s hit or miss,” she said.

Defending Koy’s comedic abilities, she said, “I don’t know whether it was the room or the jokes, I didn’t get to see it, but I do know that he’s as good as it gets when it comes to stand-ups. It’s not an easy gig. If you read any of the reviews of some of the gigs that I’ve had, where they just wished me into the cornfields, die on the vine, it’s not an easy gig.”

Koy is a seasoned comedian with six stand-up specials, but this was his first time hosting an awards ceremony. After the gig, he received mixed reviews, particularly for his opening monologue that made a joke about Taylor Swift, who clearly looked unamused.

Amid the criticism, Koy has been unfazed as he is seemingly ready for the same gig next year. A day after the Golden Globes, Koy was quoted saying that he would “love” to host the show again, but “with five months, not nine days” to prepare.
