Red carpets at award shows typically offer celebrities a platform to showcase their glamorous style and celebrate talents in the industry. The Golden Globes this year was one such fest where several high-end celebrities marked their presence and the best ones got rewarded.
But while the glamor fest was at its peak in the shiny, star-studded platform, some celebrities made it a point to not forget the follies of the world. As Hollywood rejoiced in the great art that hit our screens this year, some among them were wearing a yellow ribbon to remember a cause that is tearing the world apart.

Why Were Some Attendees Wearing A Yellow Ribbon At Golden Globes?
At the 2024 Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, some attendees were seen sporting yellow ribbons during the ceremony to give a statement. Among those donning yellow ribbons were J. Smith-Cameron from ‘Succession‘ and John Ortiz from ‘American Fiction’. But what did these yellow ribbons symbolize?
The actors were expressing support for around 130 hostages being held captive by Hamas since the Israel-Hamas war broke out on October 7. The gesture was supported and brought forward by an Israeli hostage advocacy organization called ‘Bring Them Home’. Ashlee Margolis, the founder of the Beverly Hills-based branding agency ‘The A-List’, was overseeing the coordination of the cause.
Though the main focus of this statement is on Israeli hostages, the captives being held are from 30 different nationalities, as the war between Israel and Hamas continues to rage.

The Historical Significance Behind The Color Yellow
The choice of yellow color for the ribbons also has historical significance. The logic dates back to the 1979 Iran hostage crisis when 52 Americans were held in Tehran for 444 days. The yellow ribbon became a widespread symbol of solidarity across the United States at the time. People used them on their lapels, front porches, and trees, to showcase a collective hope for the safe return of the hostages.
Timothy Hutton, who received the Best Supporting Actor award at the 38th Golden Globes, was wearing the yellow ribbons at the event that year to support the cause. The choice of yellow this time is reminder of the enduring symbol of hope and solidarity during times of adversity that persisted during the Iran hostage crisis.
There have been other red-carpet ribbon appearances as well, including the blue ribbons at the 2022 and 2023 Academy Awards, coordinated by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) Coalition. The yellow ribbons at the Golden Globes, however, did not come from any organization associated with the United Nations.
As the war continues with much controversy surrounding it, there were concerns about potential protests after the actors donned these ribbons. However, a Golden Globes spokesperson clarified that the organization is not involved in coordinating the ribbon initiative.
