It’s always fun to see our favorite Hollywood stars trading their cool superhero suits for something a lot more grounded and gritty. If the first trailer for The Uprisingis any indication, Andrew Garfield is going all in to bring a brutal historical chapter to life.

Focus Features just dropped our first look at the historical drama, which explores the chaos of the English Peasants’ Revolt of 1381. Directed by Paul Greengrass, the film strips away all the Hollywood glamor and puts Garfield right into the mud, blood, and fury of a brutal medieval rebellion.

In the historical drama, Garfield plays Ploughman, the legendary leader who led a ferocious rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II. “As war burns across England, he forms an army of the people to face the King’s might in a fight for justice and survival,” a part of the film’s official logline reads.

‘The Uprising’ unfolds after the Black Plague, when King Richard II was imposing harsh taxes on his citizens to fund the Hundred Years’ War. At the beginning of the trailer, we can see Garfield’s character all charged up, setting the tone of the story with heavy dialogue.

“I am no soldier. I am no priest. I’m just a farmer,” he says. “The land is broken. We are forced to work beyond what our souls can take.” The next scene shows people from the monarch’s side ordering peasants to pay taxes they cannot afford and to work endlessly.

Infuriated with this, Ploughman finally attacks them, sparking the famous rebellion. “It is time to set the world on fire,” he says, as his army marches to London. “There will be no peace until we are free.”

The storyline of ‘The Uprising’ stems from Greengrass’ own script. He also served as one of the producers, alongside Jason Blum, Gregory Goodman, Joanna Kaye, Joe Neurauter, and Lars Sylvest.

Alongside Garfield, the movie also stars Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, Woody Norman, and Katherine Waterston. ‘The Uprising,’ which will present Garfield in a new light, is coming to theaters on September 11.

But before this, fans will get to catch ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ in theaters. The burning question remains: Will Garfield appear in the new Spider-Man film?

Garfield Addresses Wild Conspiracy Theories

In April, Andrew Garfield clarified the online conspiracy theory stating that he will star in the upcoming Marvel project. Following the release of the film’s first trailer, fans began to assume that production had edited a certain shot, cutting some of the characters from it.

That kind of thing has happened several times before in Marvel films. The scene they referred to features Spider-Man fighting some ninjas, which fans notice are below the superhero’s eye level. They argued that there is still room for some more characters in the shot below Tom Holland.

Some fans suggest that this missing space can be occupied by Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk or Sadie Sink as Jean Grey. However, some fans suggest that Garfield and Tobey Maguire can fill it with their versions of Spider-Man.

This idea may seem unrealistic, but let’s not forget that Marvel has done it before. The company excluded Garfield and Maguire from the trailer for ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ back in 2021.

During the interview on Capital FM’s Breakfast Show, Garfield addressed this theory, saying, “This feels like a reach to be honest. Like, what do you mean there’s room for other characters? It’s literally just space underneath Spider-Man.”

“There’s room for more characters in every frame of the film probably,” he added. When asked for further clarification, he called these questions “absolutely ludicrous, conspiracy-theory-level attempt at investigative journalism.”

In fact, he couldn’t help but joke, “You noticed that I didn’t say I’m not in it though.” We’re not sure if he’ll be in the movie. But judging by how it turned out last time, fans will be too excited for another fun Spider-Man multiverse madness.
