Brian Austin Green is looking back at his marriage to Megan Fox with a fresh perspective. Years after their split, the actor admitted that the relationship taught him one of the biggest lessons of his life.
Today, as he plans his future with fiancรฉe Sharna Burgess, Green says he has completely changed the way he falls in love, and he is not afraid to admit where he went wrong.
Brian Austin Green Says His Marriage To Megan Fox Taught Him A Hard Lesson
Austin Green got candid about his past during the July 12 episode of the ‘I Do, Part 2‘ podcast. Reflecting on his years with Megan Fox, the Beverly Hills, 90210 star admitted that he used to build relationships around attraction first, something he no longer believes is the right approach.

“My ex and I were together for almost 15 years,” Green shared. “We were married for almost 10 years and I led with physical attraction.” Explaining what he meant, he added, “First, Iโd be physically attracted to somebody and then sort of build a relationship around that.”
Green and Fox started dating in 2004 before tying the knot in 2010. Although Fox first filed for divorce in 2015, the two reunited for a while before she filed again in November 2020. Their divorce was finalized in 2021.
After the divorce, Green decided he did not want to repeat the same mistakes in another relationship. At the time, he was raising four children and wanted to understand how he could become a better partner before dating again.
“I knew that I didnโt want to repeat things that I had done. So I went through all sorts of therapy and all sorts of things to really figure out what it was that I brought into a relationship that was just toxic and wasnโt good and wasnโt helping the relationship at all.”

Instead of jumping into another romance after his divorce, Green took his time. When he met ‘Dancing With the Stars‘ pro Sharna Burgess through mutual friends in 2020, he was not looking for a relationship. Even so, the two clicked almost immediately. The difference was that they let their friendship grow before taking things to the next level.

“I genuinely believe that you need to be friends with someone first,” Green said. He explained that they spent hours talking, eating together, and simply enjoying each other’s company before dating. “We were really really good, easy natural friends to begin with. Then we realized in being physical that we really worked well together, and then it became the relationship.”
Green believes that slower approach removed a lot of the pressure. “When you start from a place of a genuine connection with someone, then youโre not so concerned about whether they are truly into you or not,” he explained. “Because you guys are already speaking to each other in a very transparent way. Sharna and I talked about our best qualities and our worst qualities together. We sort of put it all out on the table.”
He added, “For us, it was pretty apparent then like, ‘Oh, hey, we should stick with us. This seems to be working’“. Looking back, Green feels many of his past relationship problems came from focusing too much on chemistry and not enough on connection. He now believes that attraction alone cannot carry a relationship forever.
The couple made their relationship Instagram official in January 2021 before competing together on season 30 of ‘Dancing with the Stars‘ later that year. After their week four elimination, they found out they were expecting their first child together. Their son, Zane Walker Green, was born on June 28, 2022, and Green proposed in 2023 with help from his children.
