Chevy was born Cornelius Crane Chase on October 8, 1943, in New York. He was born into a family that was involved in the arts. Chase’s mother Cathalene Parker was a concert pianist and his father Edward Tinsley “Ned” Chase was a writer. Both his maternal and paternal grandparents were opera singers and illustrators, respectively. He attended Stockbridge School till his High School. For graduation, he attended Haverford college and consequently, he received a Bachelor of Arts in English degree from Bard College.
After college, he became a part of a comedy ensemble ‘Channel One,’ a New York-based workshop that was later released into a film titled ‘Groove Tube’ in 1974. He was also writing for the ‘National Lampoon,’ which became a profitable Vacation franchise. It was ‘Groove Tube’ that gave him his first break in the NBC-late night comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL) in 1975. He was a writer on the show, but he carved a niche as one of the original members of the show. He was a regular on the ‘Weekend Update’ with his signature introduction, “Good evening, I’m Chevy Chase and you’re not.”
Chase left SNL after one season to pursue a career in acting. The comedian received his first big break with ‘CaddyShack’ as Ty Webb, a golfer with deadpan humor. He then cashed on his Vacation films franchise. In 1985, his portrayal as I.M. Fletcher took the box office by storm. For the film, he received a Golden Globes nomination for Best Actor. Throughout the 1980s-90s, he starred in films like ‘Fletch Lives,’ ‘Man of the House,’ ‘Snow Day,’ ‘Three Amigos,’ and ‘Orange County’. In 2009, he became a part of the ‘Community’ series.
