Season 4 of Stranger Things picks up six months after the Battle of Starcourt, with Hopper (Harbour) incarcerated in a Soviet work camp. Demogorgons are unleashed onto Hopper by Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder), an eccentric conspiracy believer, and Murray Bauman (Brett Gelman). Instead of running, he maintains his ground and engages the monster, securing a potentially lethal showdown in the prison’s courtyard. Hopper maims the demon with a sword before decapitating it with the last strike.

GQ spoke with Harbour, and he revealed that Hopper’s sword in the season 4 finale of Stranger Things is a prop from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Conan the Barbarian”. The police chief uses a sword left behind by a dying convict to slay the Demogorgon after Joyce and Hopper capture the creature in the courtyard.

“I don’t know if you saw this, but that sword I pick up — it’s the actual prop sword they used in Conan the Barbarian. It’s the sword that Schwarzenegger swings in the movie.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as the title character, Conan the Barbarian, in this epic revenge-themed fantasy adventure film. Conan is pursued by wolves, yet he is still able to find an old tomb and retrieve an immense sword from within it. The fact that the renowned item was used in such a crucial sequence on Stranger Things is another breathtaking homage to the popular culture of the 1980s.
