Calvin Klein Ad With FKA Twigs Banned In UK
Calvin Klein finds itself in hot water as one of its advertisements, featuring singer FKA Twigs, has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) due to allegations of being “overly sexualized.”
The contentious poster showcased FKA Twigs wearing a denim shirt, strategically drawn halfway around her body, exposing the side of her buttocks and half of one breast. The phrase above her, stating “Calvins or nothing“.
The ASA ruled that the ad was likely to cause serious offense by objectifying women, stating that the “image’s composition placed viewers’ focus on the model’s body rather than on the clothing being advertised.” The commission further criticized the emphasis on FKA twigs’ “physical features,” deeming it as having “presented her as a stereotypical sexual object.” Consequently, the ASA concluded that the ad was “irresponsible and likely to cause serious offense.”
