Movie making industry has grown increasingly inclined towards money-making rather than art-making. These days, very few movies manage to touch the good quality work bar. Ethan Hawke believes the same and hence admires the actors and directors who are still willing to take risks.
Hawke recently revealed his admiration for people who would do anything to keep the movie-making artform alive, with money-making off the pedestal. And he believes Francis Ford Coppola is one such director who can go to any extent for movie-making. Here’s what he said.
Ethan Hawke Acknowledges Movie Industry’s Inclination Towards Money
Ethan Hawke held no bars while he recently noted that he can clearly see how “greed” runs in the industry. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor said he appreciates those who are willing to take financial risks.
“Greed runs our universe. If you say you just want to make money, everybody understands what you are going for, and they are fine with it,” the actor said.
He added, “Great, yeah, good. Oh, yeah, he sold ten billion Big Macs. Good for him.’ No, you just poisoned the whole world.”

Moreover, Ethan also added that he loves people who prioritize art over their profit. One such name he mentioned was Francis Ford Coppola, noting that he admires the “hell out of the director“.
“I love that Coppola sold his winery to make that movie, I think that’s amazing,” Hawke said, referring to how Coppola made a self financed film called ‘Megapolis‘ at his personal expense.
He continued, “I love it when people keep the great dream alive of making something magnificent. I would never want to not be a person who wouldn’t sell their house to make a movie. I love that, I think it’s cool. I admire the hell out of it.”
Ethan Hawke’s ‘Blue Moon’ Role Is The Hardest He Has Done So Far
During the same interview, Ethan Hawke also talked for the first time about his ‘Blue Moon‘ project, revealing the first time when he read the script for the biopic of Lorenz Hart 12 years ago.
“I love it, let’s do it. We gotta make this movie”, Hawke told Linklater during a Venice Film Festival masterclass on Monday. But there was one main problem the Director thought Hawke was “too attractive for the role”.

He said, “He’s like, ‘Cool, we’re going to make it, but we need to wait a while.’ Why do we need to wait a while?”. Hawke continued, “You’re still too attractive. We gotta wait til you’re a little less attractive.’ I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ “He’s like, ‘Just trust me. Let’s just put it in a drawer, and every couple of years let’s read it and see if we’re ready or not.’”
Despite the insult to his looks, Hawke said that ‘Blue Moon‘, which recently wrapped its production, might have been the hardest thing he has done.
