Robert Downey Jr. is loved globally for his iconic portrayal of Iron Man for more than a decade in the MCU. However, just like in the movies, Downey is still in love with Gwyneth Paltrow, who portrayed his character Tony Stark’s love interest, Pepper Potts.
Robert and Gwyneth are both renowned actors who have worked together on multiple occasions in the MCU. Paltrow’s Pepper Potts grounded the billionaire playboy, philanthropist and CEO of Stark Industries. She appeared alongside Downey Jr. in the ‘Iron Man’ trilogy, ‘The Avengers,’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Even off-screen Downey Jr. and Paltrow share a long-standing friendship and professional relationship.
So, Robert revealing his ‘free Pass‘ was Gwyneth was not as shocking. During an appearance at ‘The Howard Stern Show‘ in 2016, Robert shared this information: “My free pass is because her and Susan are such good friends is Paltrow. I gotta get her back in these movies so I can make out with her onscreen again.”
While Robert is married to his wife of 18 years Susan Downey, he talked about how Susan had no issues with him making out with Paltrow. “She could care less,” he stated after he was asked about his wife getting jealous of his own screen relationships.

Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow have often spoken highly of each other in interviews and have attended various events together. They have also collaborated on projects outside the MCU, further showcasing their chemistry. However, while Robert thinks of Gweynth as his ‘free Pass’, Gwyneth has always thought of him as a friend.
In an interview with People, Gwyneth, who is happily married to Brad Falchuk, made it clear that she thought of Robert as a friend after acknowledging their on-screen chemistry. “My relationship with Robert Downey Jr., which was obviously forged through all the Iron Man and Avengers movies. I feel like I was able to find an incredible, lifelong, inspirational partner and friend,” she said.
