‘My Church‘ singer Maren Morris found herself in a whirlwind of controversy after she publicly criticized Morgan Wallen in 2021 for using a racial slur. What she didn’t expect, however, was how deeply that decision would impact her family, especially her young son.
Morris, known for her outspoken nature and advocacy, took a stand against Wallen when a video of him using the N-word surfaced. While her words echoed with a strong sense of justice, they also opened up a can of worms she wasn’t fully prepared for.
Maren Morris Fiercely Called Out Morgan Wallen
Maren Morris didn’t mince words when she called out Morgan Wallen back in 2021. She slammed him on X, pointing out the double standards in the industry. She tweeted that female musicians would “be dropped, endorsements lost, social pariahs to music row…” in a similar situation.

“We all know it wasn’t his first time using that word. We keep them rich and protected at all costs with no recourse,” she wrote.
While Wallen did apologize after facing backlash against Morris for her comments. “I appreciate those who still see something in me and have defended me. But for today, please don’t. I was wrong. I fully accept any penalties I’m facing,” she added.
But it wasn’t just her that suffered. The threats extended to her son, who was just a baby at the time. “The death threat portion for me as a young mother was obviously scary,” she revealed to Sophia Bush on her Work in Progress podcast. “And it wasn’t death threats against me, it was against my son, too.”
Maren Morris Has No Regrets
Despite the harrowing experience, Morris has no regrets about speaking out. “I stand by what I said. I don’t regret it. I don’t apologize,” she told Bush.
“I feel the exact same way as I did that day. Would I maybe use the channels of Twitter again? Probably not. There’s probably more dignified ways to get my point across, but hey, it is what it is. Don’t be racist. Don’t be transphobic. Don’t be homophobic. All the things, I still stand by that. So if you’re expecting me to feel bad — no,” she added.

Morris also addressed the puzzling reaction she received from some people. “When you’re so in the middle of this eye of the hurricane, you’re like, ‘How are people this pissed over the criticism of cruelty?‘” she said.
“And I think it’s because they’re not only defending the person that said this, but they are taking it personally as if I’m criticizing them, which I think says a lot more about their interpretation of criticism and what that content was than me as a person calling out someone using the N-word. Or even transphobia that I’ve criticized in the past — that sort of exploded in another wave,” she added.
