Walt Disney Studios announced that 2016’s beloved animated movie ‘Moana‘s live-action film is under development. However, due to the ongoing WGA strike, numerous Hollywood shows along with many Disney films have been affected including ‘Moana‘s live-action version. Despite the delay, fans of Moana are eagerly waiting to watch what the live-action film brings to the table.
It is confirmed that Dwayne Johnson will reprise his role as Maui, but instead of just lending his voice, the actor himself will be seen playing the role of the demigod. Unfortunately, Auli’i Cravalho will not return to play the titular princess in this upcoming project, hence the studio will have to look for a new protagonist. And who other than Zendaya can ace the role?

Why Auliʻi Cravalho Will Not Reprise Her Role As Moana
Many Disney fans were disappointed that Auliʻi Cravalho will not reprise her role as the titular character. She originally voiced Moana when she was just 14 and now in its live-action film, Zendaya will take over the role of the titular character. Cravalho took to Instagram to confirm she will not be playing Moana in live-action, however, she will still be involved with the production.
Cravalho started her statement with, “Aloha Mai Kakou. As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, live-action Moana is in the works and you all have been waiting very patiently for updates. So, I’ve written a few things down. When I was cast as Moana at 14, it wonderfully changed my life and started my career. In this live-action retelling, I will not be reprising the role. I believe it is absolutely vital [that] the cast accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell”. Cravalho continued, “So, as an executive producer of the film, I cannot wait to help find the next actress to portray Moana’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit, and emotional strength”.
Finally, the actress concluded “I’m truly honored to pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent to honor our incredible Pacific people’s cultures and communities that helped inspire her story and I look forward to all the beautiful Pacific representation to come. Mahalo”.
