After 16 years of enduring the unforgiving post-apocalyptic wasteland, Norman Reedus is finally hanging up his crossbow. The actor has officially bid adieu to his iconic character, Daryl Dixon—the highly skilled zombie tracker who first appeared in the third episode ofThe Walking Dead.’ The character survived all the way to the series finale before leading his own spin-off, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.’

With filming officially wrapped on the show’s fourth and final season, Reedus’s phenomenal journey has come to a close. Taking to Instagram, the actor got emotional about his career-defining role and expressed gratitude to everyone involved in the project.

On Tuesday, Norman Reedus shared a carousel post on Instagram, along with a touching note that captured the weight of his emotions. Having just returned from a fun motorcycle adventure around Mongolia, the actor expressed his gratitude for the show’s last season.

“I didn’t post any of those here, but I can’t wait for people to see this show the crew best I’ve ever worked with the feeling of accomplishment when it was over was just amazing,” he captioned the post.

“Such hard work and so much [heart] put into this, I think you’re gonna feel it. It was a special season. I can’t wait for you to see it. It hits just way different this time,” Reedus added.

The behind-the-scenes photos in focus revealed some of the veteran actor’s last moments on set. These included Reedus wearing his iconic leather survivor’s outfit, drinking champagne, and pointing towards the fake bloodied production clapperboard.

In other pictures, the actor was seen hugging the crew members in emotional wrap speeches delivered right on set. One of the snaps also featured Melissa McBride, who plays Carol Peletier on the show.

While teasing the upcoming fourth season at the New York Comic Con earlier this year, Melissa McBride shared exciting news with fans, assuring them that the upcoming fourth season is “going to be even better” than the third.

Moreover, Reedus couldn’t help but express his enthusiasm, saying they’re “killing it” on the upcoming finale. Last July, AMC officially renewed the series for a fourth season, with filming taking place in scenic locations in Spain.

Though the eagerly awaited season premiere still doesn’t have a specific release date, it is likely to debut sometime this fall. Featuring eight full-length episodes, this season will become the longest in the show’s history.
