For a decade now, Maggie Greene, played by Lauren Cohan, has been a tragic figure in ‘The Walking Dead‘ universe. The trauma stemming from her husband Glenn’s death by execution in the original show’s seventh season violently shaped the course of her entire story. In a surprising twist, the creators will probably put a fresh spin on the iconic character.
Premiering on July 26, 2026, ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City‘ Season 3 may finally break through this mold and give Maggie a chance to escape this emotional prison once and for all. During a recent appearance, Cohan and her fellow co-star Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays Negan, weighed in on the changing dynamics.
The Evolution Of An Unlikely Alliance

While promoting ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ at the Monte Carlo International Film Festival, where two episodes of the upcoming third season premiered, Cohan and Morgan discussed Maggie’s massive character evolution.
After ten years in the spotlight, Maggie no longer sees herself as a victim of Glenn’s murder. In fact, she has formed a complicated but undeniable alliance with Negan, the one who executed Glenn right before her eyes.
This breakthrough came after Maggie understood that the need to exact revenge only pushed her away from her young son, Hershel. Weighing on the dynamics between his character and Maggie, Morgan signaled a drastic change.
“We played as much hate as we could over the last ten years. Now, we have known each other longer than anyone else alive. To survive, they need each other, and that was a big revelation,” he said via Variety. “To see Maggie smile was so nice, [I] haven’t seen it in ten years!”
Meanwhile, Cohan explained it was her son who prompted Maggie to move beyond the traumatic experience in the show’s second season and look for a “bigger purpose.” She said, “This is really the first year when Maggie recognizes that to be defined by grief doesn’t serve her anymore.”
“We are these unlikely allies that realize how much they can rely on each other and how much they know each other. The irony of their relationship, with how they met, is interesting,” the actress added about her character’s equation with Negan.
Rebuilding Manhattan Amidst An Uncertain Future

Free from the need to fight, Maggie and Negan have embarked on an incredibly ambitious venture to rebuild a dead Manhattan. However, building society and infrastructure in this apocalyptic city means encountering new characters.

The most prominent on the list is Dillard (Jimmi Simpson), a lovable yet strange individual who has survived in Manhattan for years. In addition to him, viewers will get acquainted with Renata, a charming leader portrayed by Aimee Garcia.
Next, Jimmi Simpson will take on the role of Luis, Renata’s brother and the city physician, while Lisa Emery and Željko Ivanek will reprise their respective roles as the Dama and the Croat. Moreover, the show’s creators have promised fans many exciting plot twists.
These include a complete abandonment of the single-villain formula and an alternate-reality episode showing Maggie and her colleagues what their lives would look like if the zombie plague hadn’t occurred. These massive changes will definitely give Lauren’s character some rest from constant sorrow and pain. Whether Maggie and her allies can maintain this fragile peace remains to be seen.
