Fans of ‘Supernatural’ have reason to celebrate. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, currently wreaking havoc as Negan on ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City,’ is publicly championing his former on-screen son, Jensen Ackles, to enter the zombie apocalypse.

During a recent fan convention panel in Burbank, Morgan didn’t hold back his enthusiasm for a reunion with Ackles. “Yeah, that would just be phenomenal to see,” Morgan stated, according to reports from the event. When discussing the possibility of Ackles joining the cast of ‘Dead City,’ Morgan was direct and persuasive. “We’d love it to happen, I’ll tell you that. Make it so! It’s not a big ask, I’d love to make it happen,” he said.

The two actors share a deep history, having played father and son on the long-running CW hit ‘Supernatural.’ Morgan’s time on that show was brief, but his casting as the patriarch left a significant mark on the series and its fans. Now, Morgan is eager to flip the dynamic and invite his former protege into the gritty world of AMC’s zombie franchise.

People like to work with people they trust,” Morgan explained, hinting at the natural chemistry that makes the casting a no-brainer. He confirmed that he and Ackles have already had conversations about the potential cameo, adding, “Funny enough, we had a conversation a…” before trailing off, leaving fans to speculate on what was discussed.

However, turning this dream into reality faces a big hurdle. Jensen Ackles is currently one of the busiest actors in genre television.

While Morgan campaigns for him in the world of the undead, Ackles returned as a series regular for the fifth and final season of Amazon’s hit series ‘The Boys.’ Beyond that, Ackles is headlining the upcoming prequel series ‘Vought Rising,’ which is expected to stream on Prime Video in 2027.

This busy schedule is a familiar problem within the ‘Walking Dead’ universe. Series creator Robert Kirkman recently noted that while he supports the idea of crossovers, coordinating schedules is “a logistical nightmare” and a “big project” because of the stars’ various commitments.

‘The Boys’ Already Brought Back ‘Supernatural’ Stars but Missed Morgan

The push for an Ackles appearance comes as the broader ‘Supernatural‘ family has already started reuniting in other places. Showrunner Eric Kripke, who created both ‘Supernatural‘ and ‘The Boys,‘ delivered a massive fan service moment by reuniting Ackles with his co-stars Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins in the final season of ‘The Boys.’

Interestingly, that specific reunion had to work around Morgan’s absence. In ‘The Boys’ Season 4, Morgan appeared as the grizzled CIA operative Joe Kessler. But a major plot twist later revealed Kessler was a hallucination, meaning an in-person scene between the ‘Supernatural’ father and son became “impossible” for that series.

This leaves ‘The Walking Dead‘ universe as the most viable place for the two to finally share the screen again.

For now, Morgan remains persistent. The actor has a history of playful public call-outs with Ackles, dating back to a famous 2016 Twitter exchange where Ackles “found” Negan’s barbed wire bat Lucille in the trunk of the ‘Supernatural’ Impala. Whether that persistence will lead to a guest slot in ‘Dead City’ remains to be seen, but the door appears to be wide open.
