The filmmaking industry is not an exception to the woes of patriarchy. Like any other industry, it’s the men who dominate the important positions in Hollywood. While there has been a slight improvement in terms of gender inclusivity over the last few years, it is still not a smooth sailing ride for women to make it big in the film industry.
Actress Zoe Saldaña, the star face of ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ and ‘Avatar‘, recently voiced her opinions about the lack of women directors in the industry. While her acting career has given her much fame, Zoe now wants to dive into direction. Here’s what she said about it.
Zoe Saldaña’s Take On Directing Movies
Zoe Saldaña finds action movies more approachable, as she revealed during a recent interview. Considering that she just got a head start to her career, she’s seen as a “late bloomer.” Despite that, she is willing to expand her horizons early in her career by diving into the art of filmmaking.
This urge to get into direction also comes from the lack of women filmmakers in the industry, especially when it comes to action films. “I’ve never seen a woman direct James Bond,” she said during Toronto Film Festival. “I like ‘The Equalizer.’ I watch crime shows, and, so, maybe in the future. I’ve always been drawn to heist themes,” the actress added.

Zoe continued, “‘Heat’ is a film that I need to watch at least once a year and analyze it, and the way that Michael Mann just pairs it all together, the way that everybody performed it. So, I would love to start with an action-heist sort of thing.”
Zoe Saldaña Talks About Her Roles In The Highest-Grossing Films
During the hour-long conversation at the packed TIFF theater, Zoe Saldaña also touched on a wide range of topics including her highest-grossing films, ‘Avatar’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. She said, “It’s all the technology that Jim uses [in ‘Avatar’ that] gives way for the performer to take pride and priority over his or her entire performance.”

Zoe added, “We’re not lending our voices. We’re not doing any of that. In 2009, Jim, as usual, was ahead of his time. He’s a scientist at heart, so he’s creating things that people need time to understand. He helped me realize that I should be okay with that.”
She’s proud of the legacy of ‘Avatar’ and knows that the movie will continue to inspire people from coming generations.
