Why Does Zoe SaldaƱa Find Marvel’s Secrecy ‘Annoying’?

The ‘Queen of sequels’ Zoe SaldaƱa will be back on the big screen with one of the most awaited sequels of the year ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’. But, that is not it for the actress. Zoe had an amazing ride this year playing varied characters. In a slice-of-life drama, ‘From Scratch’, she plays Amy Wheeler, a law student who is found at the cross-road of cross-cultural love.

She will reprise Neytiri, the most loved role of the ‘Center Stage’ actress in Cameron’s sci-fi magnum opus. In November, she was also seen in Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special’ playing the green creature Gamora. Zoe has been part of the marvelous universe of the Marvel superhero catalog. She was seen in the Avengers installments like ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, ‘Avengers: Endgame’, and ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy’ franchise. Despite this long association, the actress has a problem with the studio, and rightfully, it is about the secrecy policy.

The actors who appear in the Marvel sagas have to swear to secrecy! Tom Holland may be an exception because the studio has lost hopes of maintaining secrecy from the chap! But, Zoe who has played Gamora in the ‘Avengers’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ franchises does not find it ‘cool’ at all! She took a jibe at the studio during her prosthetics session she posted on Instagram. She posted a picture in Gamora makeup with a pile of bonded notes and scripts hidden with scribbles.

During the magazine shoot for InStyle, she expressed her annoyance about the major motion picture studios’ policy to not let any information out. When asked about her recent Instagram post, she said, “That [secrecy]can be annoying sometimes. “That’s not cool, because you have to memorize, you have to prepare, you have to do research. And I tend to take myself a little too seriously sometimes”.

She said that she prefers filmmakers who do not question or underway her intelligence. She said, “I really enjoy working with filmmakers that don’t underestimate my intelligence and know that I am an adult. I will be discreet. It is as important to me as it is for him or her that I don’t let these scripts out of my sight”.

When Zoe SaldaƱa began her career, she starred in the 2003 sequel of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ titled ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl’. She played the smuggler Anamaria alongside Depp starring in his signature, quirky Jack Sparrow. Since then, she has become a part of some highest-grossing franchises like ‘Star Trek’, ‘Avatar’, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘, and others. But, after all these years, she is having franchise fatigue.

In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily, SaldaƱa said, “I feel that for the last 10 years of my life, I’ve been just stuck. I felt stuck doing these franchises”. She continued, “I’m very grateful for the opportunities that they provided, from collaborating with amazing directors and getting to meet cast members that I consider friends and getting to play a role that fans, especially children, love. But it also meant that I felt artistically stuck in my craft of not being able to expand or grow or challenge myself by playing different sorts of genres and different roles”.

‘Avatar: Way of Water’ will hit theaters on December 16th, 2022.
