‘Harry Potter‘ author J.K. Rowling has been attracting controversy with her frequent remarks that are homophobic and transphobic. Now, she is speaking out against a new law passed in Scotland that protects people against hate crime. The law establishes the offense of inciting hatred and prioritizes the rights of transgender individuals. Meanwhile, Rowling, who is opposed to gender transformation, emphasized in a post on X, “Freedom of speech and belief are at an end in Scotland if the accurate description of biological sex is deemed criminal.”
The author has been one of the most vocal opponents of the law and the Scottish government’s position on transgender rights. She further added, “It is impossible to accurately describe or tackle the reality of violence and sexual violence committed against women and girls, or address the current assault on women’s and girls’ rights unless we are allowed to call a man a man.” She continued, “Legislation is wide open to abuse by activists who wish to silence those of us speaking out about the dangers of eliminating women’s and girls’ single-sex spaces”.
Rowling openly made it clear that she is ready to get arrested and return to her birthplace Scotland, if any of her remarks were deemed inappropriate under the new law. Siobhan Brown MSP, a Holyrood minister, stated, “Misgendering someone online may result in an investigation.” Supporters of the law tend to be more accepting, but critics such as J.K Rowling claim that the measure doesn’t go far enough in protecting women and could even stifle free speech.
Homophobic And Transphobic Statements By J.K Rowling
Rowling has continuously made statements against the trans community without any fear of getting canceled. In 2020, she called trans people a ‘new kind of conversion therapy.’ She received backlash but that didn’t stop her from following her beliefs.
Furthermore, she has been making headlines since 2018 for her transphobic views. She liked one of the posts on X that read: “Trans women as men in dresses”. She openly desires to go to prison, if any of her statements hurt anyone.
