Jimmy Kimmel has been hosting his hit talk show ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!‘ for more than twenty years now. However, it now seems that this classic Americanshow will soon become another victim of the OTT platform domination. Jimmy sat for the latest episode of the Politickin podcast wherein he hinted that the talk show might be coming to an end.
Mulling over the success of streaming platforms, the talk show host observed that his television show might not be the only one to shut down. The ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!‘ aired on television in 2003 and has had twenty-two seasons as of today. Here’s why Kimmel thinks the show would shut down.
Will ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Shut Down?
Jimmy Kimmel recently sat down with Gavin Newsom, Marshawn Lynch, and Doug Hendrickson for an episode of the Politickin podcast. The comedian seemed doubtful about any future late-night television shows. “I don’t know if there will be any late-night television shows on network TV in 10 years,” Jimmy said.
He explained, “There’s a lot to watch and now people can watch anything at any time, they’ve got all these streaming services.” Jimmy added, “It used to be Johnny Carson was the only thing on at 11:30 p.m. and so everybody watched, and then David Letterman was on after Johnny so people watched those two shows, but now they’re so many options,” he said.
Jimmy did not explicitly confirm the end of his talk show but the future of television shows seemed bleak to the comedian. He further explained, “Maybe more significantly, the fact that people are easily able to watch your monologue online the next day, it really cancels out the need to watch it when it’s on the air.”
Jimmy Kimmel Opens Up About His Future Prospects
During his talk in the podcast, Jimmy Kimmel also seemed well aware of the hardship he might face if or when he quits hosting. “I will have a hard time when it’s over. It worries me,” he said.
The comedian further said that as a late-night host, he might not have a plethora of career options to choose from. Jimmy confesses that this is one of the reasons why he extending his contracts. He explained, “because I fear that day, that Monday after my final show, where it’s like, ‘OK, now what am I going to do?”
Jimmy stated, “There aren’t a huge amount of options for late-night hosts after the shows are over. People think of you like a late-night talk show host, it’s not like you are suddenly going to start starring in films.”
Meanwhile, he has taken a break from hosting. The talk has hired guest hosts Kathryn Hahn and Kumail Nanjiani, while Kimmel is expected to return to hosting by fall.
