“It was my life. Then the acting thing started to happen, the band broke up, and I got a job (’21 Jump Street’) where they were going to pay me USD 1,200 a week,” Depp recalled in an interview with The Times. “The first thing I did was call my mom and say, ‘Hey, you can quit your job.'”
Once his television contract ended, Depp intentionally steered away from heartthrob roles. Projects such as ‘Cry-Baby’ and Tim Burton’s ‘Edward Scissorhands’ allowed him to reinvent himself as a character actor rather than another Hollywood leading man.
Why Hiding Behind Characters Felt More Natural
For Depp, dramatic physical transformations offered more than artistic freedom. They also made acting feel far more comfortable. “The concept of being a ‘serious actor’ is the biggest oxymoron. I still can’t take acting seriously, but a bit of method is a useful thing,” he added.

“At the end of a production, there is always a period of depression, because I’m a shy person in life, and in character I can be anything,” he mentioned further.
That contrast explains why so many of his most memorable performances involved heavy makeup, elaborate costumes, unusual voices, and dramatic physical transformations. Rather than exposing more of himself on screen, Depp found comfort in becoming someone entirely different.
