In her latest book, ‘I Want to Matter: Your Life Is Too Short and Too Precious to Waste’, Kathie Lee Gifford recounts the time she found out that the creators of ‘Charlie’s Angels‘ were looking to replace one of the actresses of the show, likely Kate Jackson, who left the show in 1979 after three seasons.

Her agent asked her to audition for the role, after which she reached the studio only to face a “cruel” casting director. Speaking about her meeting with the female casting director, Gifford said, “She goes, ‘Let me tell you right now, you’re not right for Charlie’s Angels.'”

When she asked why, the agent replied, “Because we’re looking for a pretty girl. You know, like Jaclyn Smith pretty, gorgeous, gorgeous.” Describing the experience as a “gut punch“, Gifford said she nevertheless managed to find humor in the situation.

As she walked out, she told the agent, “When you’re casting a cartoon, let me know,” and lifted her leg in a mock gesture of frustration. Recalling the incident, Gifford however specified that she found the agent’s cruelty as unnecessary and contrary to the kindness her father had instilled in her.
