‘Charlie’s Angels‘ remains a fun watch for many even today, decades after it was a prime television show. Fans of the film love its characters as much as the film. However, the fun on screen comes at the cost of some brutality off-screen — or so claims Kathie Lee Gifford in her latest book, ‘I Want to Matter: Your Life Is Too Short and Too Precious to Waste’.
The actress has opened up about troubling experiences from her early career with the casting agent of ‘Charlie’s Angels‘. In her book, the former ‘Today‘ co-host recalls being told she wasn’t good enough to star in ABC’s ‘Charlie’s Angels’, a popular television series that aired from 1976 to 1981. Here’s what she has revealed in the book.

“We’re Looking For A Pretty Girl”: Kathie Lee Gifford Recalls Her “Gut Punch” Experience
In her latest book, ‘I Want to Matter: Your Life Is Too Short and Too Precious to Waste’, Kathie Lee Gifford recounts the time she found out that the creators of ‘Charlie’s Angels‘ were looking to replace one of the actresses of the show, likely Kate Jackson, who left the show in 1979 after three seasons.
Her agent asked her to audition for the role, after which she reached the studio only to face a “cruel” casting director. Speaking about her meeting with the female casting director, Gifford said, “She goes, ‘Let me tell you right now, you’re not right for Charlie’s Angels.'”
When she asked why, the agent replied, “Because we’re looking for a pretty girl. You know, like Jaclyn Smith pretty, gorgeous, gorgeous.” Describing the experience as a “gut punch“, Gifford said she nevertheless managed to find humor in the situation.
As she walked out, she told the agent, “When you’re casting a cartoon, let me know,” and lifted her leg in a mock gesture of frustration. Recalling the incident, Gifford however specified that she found the agent’s cruelty as unnecessary and contrary to the kindness her father had instilled in her.

‘Charlie’s Angels’ Has Been A Hit Franchise Over The Years
The original ‘Charlie’s Angels‘ starred Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith, and Farrah Fawcett, with replacements that came later including stars like Cheryl Ladd, Shelley Hack, and Tanya Roberts joining over the years.
The series also later inspired a franchise, including the popular 2002 film starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu, as well as a short-lived 2011 reboot series. All the versions of Charlie’s Angels were hit and resonated quite well with the audiences.
