‘Modern Family‘—the program that won a ton of Emmy Awards and made us laugh and cry. At its core were Julie Bowen and Sofía Vergara, two women who on-screen had an undeniable chemistry even though they played opposite roles. Bowen, with her quick wit and unstable energy, was the perfect foil to Vergara’s vivacious and larger-than-life personality.
But while the cameras captured their on-screen magic, the press was busy brewing a different kind of story—one that painted these two co-stars as rivals rather than friends. Not surprisingly, in a world where women are frequently used as props against one another, the media attempted to fabricate drama while there was none. And Julie Bowen has a lot to say about that.

How The Media Tried To Stir The Pot For Julie Bowen
Julie Bowen recently opened up about the press’s relentless attempts to create a feud between her and Sofía Vergara. In an interview on Jennie Garth’s I Choose Me podcast, Bowen spilled the tea on how the media seemed determined to make it seem like the two actresses couldn’t stand each other.
“They were just determined to pit us against each other, like we hated each other,” Bowen said. “It’s this scarcity mindset that there’s only one woman who can be happy at a time.” Honestly, it sounds like the media needs to get a new hobby.
By the time ‘Modern Family‘ reached its 8th season, the so-called “feud” had spiraled so out of control that Bowen felt the need to address it publicly. And how did she do it? By showing up on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show‘ wearing Sofía Vergara’s clothes.
Yup, you read that right! Bowen decided to borrow one of Vergara’s blouses and wear it on national television, all in an effort to prove just how ridiculous the rumors were. In a move that could only be described as iconic, Bowen even did her best Vergara impression, quoting her co-star: “Just borrow my blouse!”

Are Sofía Vergara And Julie Bowen Really Friends?
Despite what the press wanted us to believe, Bowen and Vergara’s relationship was anything but hostile. In fact, Bowen had nothing but praise for her co-star. “I love Sofía, and I love how different we are,” she gushed. “I love that she is funny and self-effacing and bawdy, and she loves life and she loves dancing and eating cake, and all of these things.“
Bowen recalled how the press “kept trying to make me and Sofía sort of Betty and Veronica,” referring to the classic comic book rivalry. But the truth is, there was no rivalry—just two incredibly talented women who brought their A-game to one of the most beloved TV shows of all time.
Bowen found it “really disappointing” that the media couldn’t accept the possibility of two women coexisting peacefully in the spotlight. “I learned so much from being around her about what it is to be a really powerful, completely in herself woman,” Bowen reflected, giving Vergara the credit she deserves.
