Kourtney Kardashian, often considered the witty one in the dazzling Kardashian clan, is yet again bringing her charm to social media by playfully poking fun at her sister Kim Kardashian‘s infamous diamond earring mishap. Taking to Instagram on Sunday, the 44-year-old reality star posted a series of beachside photos with the iconic quote, “My diamond earring came off in the ocean and it’s gone.”
The caption is in a mocking reference to an iconic moment in the Kardashian family when Kim had a meltdown over losing a $75,000 diamond earring during a vacation to French Polynesia back in 2011.
In Kourtney’s Instagram post, she can be seen smiling as she frolics in the ocean, with another shot showing her holding her hands to her ears, mimicking Kim. Captioned “My diamond earring came off in the ocean and it’s gone”, the post is a cheeky nod to Kim’s dramatic episode, in a sisterly banter that fans have seemingly come to love.
The joke stems from season 6 of ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians‘, when Kim lost the diamond earring when her then-boyfriend Kris Humphries tossed her into the ocean. “My earring’s gone!” she said in the episode, that aired in 2011.
“My diamond earring came off in the ocean!” Kim shouted and began to cry, when Kourtney appeared from her villa to respond, “Kim, there’s people that are dying.” The moment garnered heavy attention and still remains one of the most iconic moments of the show. It soon went viral, and several jokes about it started circulating at the time.
Kim Kardashian Is Done With The Jokes About Her Lost Diamond Ring
However, soon after, Kim made it clear that she was done with the jokes about it. In a November 2023 GQ video, Kim expressed her weariness with the endless references to the incident.
“Any time I’m in water, people will ask me if I found my diamond earring in the ocean,” Kim explained. “I don’t know if I showed this on our show, but Kylie [Jenner] found the earring. So, she dove in the ocean, put on goggles, found it, and then she went back and found the back of it. That’s how clear the water is in Bora Bora, so, guys, the earring has been found,” she added.
“It was found in 2010. If anyone’s going to Bora Bora searching for gold and diamonds, [it’s] not there,” Kim said. Despite Kim’s desire to move on from the past, Kourtney’s playful jab proves that some family jokes never go out of style.
