Mariah Carey Shared A Complex Bond With Her Mother
As she continues to grieve the massive loss, Mariah Carey recently opened up about her feelings. In an exclusive statement to People, the 55-year-old singer expressed her devastation.
She said, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.“
Patricia Carey, a Juilliard-trained opera singer, was more than just Mariah’s mom. She was the one who nurtured the superstar’s now-legendary voice. However, Mariah had a complicated relationship with Patricia.
In her 2020 memoir, ‘The Meaning of Mariah Carey‘, she wrote, “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white – it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions.”
She described her connection with her mother as “a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment.”
Despite these challenges, Mariah acknowledged the love that tethered them, even dedicating part of her memoir to Patricia, writing, “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”

Mariah Carey Had Strained Ties With Sister Alison Too
Mariah Carey’s relationship with her older sister Alison was also quite complex. In her memoir, Mariah stated that it was “emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact” with Alison or their brother, Morgan.
In the same interview with People, she also added, “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed.” Mariah continued, “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
