Patrick J. Adams was propelled to success through the popular legal show ‘Suits‘, wherein he played one of the series leads, Mike Ross. The show lasted for seven seasons and came into the limelight recently after its OTT release. While it now has a spinoff in the works, Adams isn’t returning to the same title anytime soon though he remains hopeful.
However, recently speaking with Jesse Tyler Ferguson in his podcast ‘Dinner’s on Me’, the actor revealed that his decision to leave the show was more than just a career-based move. While his fans were loving him on screen, the actor confessed to struggling with his personal life. Here’s what he said.
Patrick J. Adams Reveals ‘Suits’ Pressure Had Sent Him Into The Substance Abuse Rabbit Hole
Patrick J. Adams’ Mike Ross in ‘Suits‘ left well before the show ended despite having a lead role and an interesting character arc. His on-screen partner Meghan Markle left before him as she joined the royal family after her marriage to Prince Harry, and that is considered one of the reasons for Adams’ exit from the show.
However, during a recent interview, Adams clarified that he was also dealing with some major personal problems while being a part of the show, which is the prime reason he quit it. “I wasn’t taking good care of my mental health and I was drinking too much [at] the end of Season 7,” Adams shared on the podcast.
He said that he felt “pretty miserable” because of unprocessed emotions. “I didn’t have the tools to deal with that depression beyond just spending money and drinking too much,” the actor said. Adams admitted to struggling with his mental health which began influencing his personal life as well.

He revealed he used to numb himself with substance abuse to deal with his insecurities and fears. “And they just weren’t working. And they were taking a toll on my relationship, for sure, but also just making me a very not present father,” he said.
“That for me was a breaking point when I was like, ‘I think I should stop drinking probably, because I don’t wanna be that dad.’ The best thing I think I ever did for myself was stop drinking. It just needed to happen in order for all these other things to happen,” Adams said.

Patrick J. Adams’ exit from ‘Suits‘ was ultimately informed by his mental health odyssey. When Season 8 was ready to roll out, the only thing he could relate to in staying was money. His mother would tell him, “If it’s only for the money, don’t do it“.
