‘Gladiator II‘ star Paul Mescal‘s popularity has shot up after some of his impressive performances in films and TV shows. As he now prepares for his next big hit, the actor has broken his silence over parasocial relationships between celebrities and fans.
He also opened up about the fluidity between his public self and private self. The ‘Normal People’ actor reacted to the blurring lines of his identity on his latest ‘Hot Ones‘ appearance. Here’s everything he said.
Paul Mescal Opens Up About His Fans’ Perception Of Him
Paul Mescal broke people’s perception of what he actually is as a person. “It’s just a weird thing because ultimately I don’t know you, you don’t know me, but we know a lot about each other because we’re visible the whole time,” the actor said during his appearance on Sean Evans’ popular Hot Ones interview.
“And audiences take the real personalities of the actors into which the characters they play, so it gets pretty tricky sometimes,” he added. Mescal, whose rising glory appears to have started with the lead role in ‘Normal People‘, cleared his stance on not compromising to public demand for film roles.

“I mean this with the greatest sincerity and kindness, but I don’t really care what people want me to do,” he said. He further underlined that trying to pander to public expectations would be a disservice to them. “If it’s working at the moment, which I hopefully feel like it is, then I want to keep doing that until it starts going downhill,” he said.
Paul Mescal Has Expressed His Disappointment Regarding His Personal Life Interference Before
This is not the first time Paul Mescal has expressed such a view. His earlier statements are similar, where he spoke about the highly publicized attention to his personal life, including his alleged romance with singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers.
In a cover story in Harper’s Bazaar, Mescal talked of how he is frustrated by all this intrusion, with “it’s nobody else’s business and should never be commented upon, because it’s indecent. And it’s unkind.”

Discussing his role in ‘Normal People‘, Mescal remembered one of the chemistry reads he did when things seemed uncertain. He had almost given up on any hope when, during the chemistry reads, they just hadn’t found the girl for Marianne. Everything changed when Daisy Edgar-Jones arrived. “When Daisy walked in, it was unanimous,” he said.
Fans will soon get to see Mescal once again on the big screen as he features along with Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Joseph Quinn in ‘Gladiator II‘ — a much-awaited sequel that will hit theaters on November 22.
